So I have been really concentrating on studying the Aeolian(Minor) scale. Mainly G. I just picked that one.
Gotta start somewhere right?


My update to date is taht I now have all of the Gmin scale memroized. I currently am trying to phrase correctly with it.

-The fact that I am able to sorta improvise in it (Trying to improve improv skills).
-Realize when I hit a incorrect note.
-Understand how to shift the patterns depending what key I am in.

Im starting to look at the Major scale and noticed how the same patterns shift 3 frets. Im still trying to grasp the concept and memorize the concept but I think Im really startin to get this stuff.


Here a little improv I tried to do. A couple of sour notes but I realized at the time I hit the wrong ones.
Any comments appreciated. And as always thanks GMC.

Yeah, the leads are alright.

But that rhythm guitarist is AMAZING!!!! I bet he has the chicks lining up.

Interesting !

I like it because it shows your ear is correcting things like you said. I don't think there were any wrong notes, on contrary, with this type of soloing approach you train your ear as well as fingers. I think you did a good job with it.
Especially when you used Ab note and went to G phrygian instead of aeolian - you worked your way back without hurting listener in any way

And you had awesome rhythm player in the back to support you

Can't help you on the theory part since im such a nebie to any of that..but I did want to say I thought that whole thing sounded cool I really enjoyed it!! Great job you two!

I thought I was in G Aeolian the whole time. I may have hit the Ab on accident and was unintentional.
Or if I read you correctly thats the point of the comment? I was able to revert back to G Aeolian from that goof up? Or was it a goof up? LOL.. Im sucha newb.




Thanks. I have been trying to teach myself the whole scaling thing. I think the key is learning little by little. Pick a scale and learn it to the max and you will soon realize how it starts to replicate in all the other notes.

G Aeolian and Phrygian have only one note difference , and thats Ab that you hit on accident
It worked great I liked it a lot - you have nothing to worry - keep up the good work!!!

I am fully in agreement with Pedja.


This is a nice bit of improv work.

Without trying to utterly confuse you, the mode shift you did, the Ab.....This is not wrong, you will find as you progress in your understanding of the guitar, and music in general that it is riddled with what is called "Accidental" notes.

These notes add flavor to a particular piece, but the reason they are called accidentals is because the note itself is not tied to the key of the song or phrase in any concrete way.

Particularly when playing with the kind of backing track you are. If Jer's backing track had deeper chord layers you may not have been able to add that Ab without it sounding out of place. You will start to find that when certain chord structures are presented that you can draw outside the lines to add texture.

For instance lets say that you are playing against a backing track that has nothing but powerchords and the bass playing the root notes. Since a powerchord has no 3rd you can play with that 3rd interval anyway you like to add a different element.

That stuff was very good man! I like the fact you went on the higher positions to play the solo. I think you did very good, and can see that you are still experimenting with note positions, going up and down. Next step could be inserting a slide, or a bend in there to create some new licks! Well done, keep rockin!
