Hi there! As you might have noticed the start page now looks a bit different biggrin.gif. You now have two main boxes with the newest lesson updates: New Guitar Lessons and Band Class. You will also find a new section called GMC Community, where new activity in the Blog and Wiki will be presented, as well as the latest forum posts (as usual).

This new layout will allow for more frequent updates of new lessons! biggrin.gif We also decided that it was time to separate the singing, bass and drum lessons from the guitar lessons. So we now have them collected in their own box. smile.gif This also means that you will no longer find other instruments than guitar lessons in the display of random of lessons.

I hope you will enjoy the new start page! smile.gif

I understand what you're trying to do with the new front page setup but IMHO it's too busy and confusing. Imagine a new person coming to GMC for the very first time and seeing that front page? I know if it were me I'd move on because the page looks like it has information scattered here and there seemingly at random.

Please don't get me wrong I'm not trying to put down anyone's work or what the good people at GMC are trying to do for us. I understand that this happens when a site like GMC grows and new items are added on as time goes by.

Just so people don't think I'm bashing the new front page just for the purpose of bashing it here's how I would have it setup: I would take the GMC welcome block along with the start block and put them at the top left (as you are looking at the page), then next level I would put the new guitar lessons, band class and right under that the recent guitar lesson updates, under that from left to right GMC Community, latest forum topics then the GMC blog and finally the Wiki, on the bottom I would put the ads for the t-shirt and for new instructors, I would also make the search area narrower.

Sorry if it seems like I'm butting in where I don't belong. I'm just trying to help.

perhaps this could be solved by new visitors being taken to a different less cluttered page explaining what the site is about- then a giving a cookie so that us members dont get redirected to that age every time...perhaps thats something worth considering.

Im liking the new layout but must admit if i were seeing it for the first time id be like ohmy.gif - i often borwse other sites and am put off because i "dont know where to go"

RobM, thank you for taking time to comment and provide us with your suggestions. It is certainly not easy to design for all visitors, veterans as newcomers. All steps that we take are both to be able to handle our growing content, as well as making possible the development of new ideas to make the site even better for you and all users.

This new design has been developed to make the start page represent more the content we have, and display what are our strongest cards - the guitar lessons and the interaction between musicians. For completely new users we also have, as you know, the welcome video which explains the concept of the site.

I really appreciate your concern for the site, and we will definately consider you suggestions. I also hope that you can see benefits from this new design, even though it might be a bit uncomfortable before you get used to it. smile.gif

I'm sorry, but I agree with RobM. I'm confused by the new front page. At first I thought there was a problem with my browser so I hit the reload - same page. I cleared my cache and deleted cookies, same page. It looks like there is random stuff scattered everywhere and nothing makes sense. This leads me to believe there may be something technically wrong with my specific PC/software that I am using. Or perhaps this is intentional?

I'm also not bashing any new efforts to improve GMC - I love it here and I know how hard it is to maintain such a great site. I just don't see as much organization as there used to be and I am wondering how to navigate it. unsure.gif

I think it's great! biggrin.gif

However..

To address the business problem, why not put a three column box at the top and put some introductory word candy there?
That might do the trick.
Doesn't have to be tall at all - just something to tie it all together and make it better.

Try it. wink.gif

In firefox - hold ctrl and press F5. (You might need to clear the so called "css" or everything will look completely upside down! )

If possible you can provide us a screenshot so we can see what you see - it would be appreciated! smile.gif

edit - we just discovered that "new" symbols are way out in in internet explorer, I hope we can fix this as soon as possible!
