GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ If You See Your Idol, Does That Keep You Motivated ?

Posted by: chast Nov 19 2007, 10:05 PM

Hey GMC'ers,

I just want to ask you, the question mentioned in the topic wink.gif
If you see your idol playing guitar, does that keep you motivated and practice more or are you like "Man, he plays so good" and you put your guitar down, because your idol is playing so good ?

PS: Dont take the 3rd pool choice too serious ;D

If it wasnt for the videos of Bjørn Berge on youtube, I would have been alot further behind in my playing now.

Posted by: lefty01 Nov 19 2007, 10:14 PM

Oh, heck yes. My guitar idols are the one's who made me startplaying, and always inspire me to keep going. I know I'll never reach their level, but it does inspire me to keep going.

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 19 2007, 10:36 PM

talking to Michael Angelo Batio, watching him play, it gave me so much inspiration. smile.gif

Posted by: Pavel Nov 19 2007, 10:37 PM

Right now i am too pissed off with my financial situation and all the stuff i have to do besides guitar that i am not in the mood to play at all....

I was watching Angelo and Rusty the whole day today and i am still in bad mood...

I can't decide between one and three it'S both true wink.gif

I can't say yes or no on this question because sometimes it gives me huge motivation and sometimes I could cry after seeing my Idol, because it shows me my own disability

Nah, it should show you what you can do with hard work wink.gif thats how i see it smile.gif

I dont really have any idols...

tongue.gif

but these days I like to take inspiration from styles and artists I both dislike and enjoy smile.gif

I find that no matter how much I dislike something, theres always something to be learnt from it for use in doing other things laugh.gif

Posted by: Fabian Schulz Nov 19 2007, 10:51 PM

sure wink.gif that's what it showes me almost every time.

But sometimes when I have a bad day it frustrates me biggrin.gif

Nah, that should want you to play even more. You'll never get to that level (or close to it), if you don't play. All the lessons here really keep me going too. I truly believe, if I would not have found GMC, I would have quit playing.

The thing is - we all have different lives. Some people can spend 12 hours a day on guitar and they don't have to worry about what will they do in a month because their parents are rich as hell and the bastard will never have to work.

In my situation it's somewhat different. I have to finish university and start working on a regular basis. I have a 25 years old brother who lives in Ukraine and there is no chance he can by himself a house/flat, and my parents are sending him money each month so he can pay for a living their as his salary is way too low.

So, sometimes i see a guy shredding the hell out of the guitar and it doesn't impress me a bit - it only drives me mad because the guy than showes me his 15 guitars - all customs and signatures, and when i ask him: "How did you get them?" - "My mom bought them for me!". I just turn around and go...

I guess you understand what i mean by the text above....

I concur. cool.gif

I tend to lack focus, so I eventually lapse into not playing if I dont find something fresh to do and challenge myself with, GMC provides challenges in shovel-fulls!

- Pavel, I know the feeling, but remember that some of the most inspired musicians in the world worked from the bottom up, look at Muris, caught in the middle of terrible conflict for a large part of his life and he creates some of the most brilliant and original music I have ever heard, obviously he put in the hard work, but I reckon if he had it all to begin with, he wouldnt have been so good today.

If people can relax all the time and rely on their "mommy's" to bail them out then they ultimately never pushed to create brilliant music or get anywhere, I know many people who are just given such things on a plate, but they dont produce brilliant or original music, they run the same old gauntlet as everyone else and rip-off their favourite artists - sound-a-likes.

I know what you mean, but sometimes you just get fed up with everything and get sick of everything!!!

Right now i want to finally get my RC and start exploring the 7-string guitar, and i am crazy about waiting sad.gif sad.gif

Thats different by me, one time when i see a video i think like .. whooaw he's great .. i need to be on that level or higher too, and then im going to practice practice practice and i learn new things, but sometimes its just .. mannn o mann .. what a guy blink.gif " puts down guitar, watching anime or something " and then about 1 hour .. pick up the guitar, jamming on GMC and things .. biggrin.gif

Hehe, I'm much in the same boat, I wont be able to afford a new guitar to replace my second hand beat up telecaster until then and I've still got 5 weeks of exams and essays to contend with this term still - of which I'm failing to keep track of laugh.gif

Never the less, gotta keep it positive smile.gif

Posted by: Muris Nov 20 2007, 12:28 AM

Does keep me motivated,absolutely. smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Nov 20 2007, 01:27 AM

on the subject of one of Pavels previous posts...

Is anyone else getting sick and tired off seeing videos pop up with some little kid who bought a JEM and cant play it, and titles his video "Awesome Shred Solo"?

All those videos show up in the related video thing all the time in you tube.

Well.... I don't know for sure. See, I have not actually seen Muris in person but his videos are what is motivating me right this very second. When I get a bit down in practicing I just stop by his myspace. That flat fixes it everytime smile.gif . He shows me what may actually be impossible for me to ever play. But more over, he also shows me what I will be able to play and that is several 100% better than I can now. cool.gif. And that my friends, is where I am going.

He does drive me to play more not stop.

If I'm feeling down about my playing...I watch some of my ska idols. Less Than Jake, Mad Caddies, or my punky idols, Bad Religion, Offspring, and I realize....THIS STUFF IS SO FUN! I'm so happy I picked up the guitar, then I start playing again...it's great to realize that as important as technique is....that's not why it's fun biggrin.gif
