Yeah I can see what you mean, but each to their own eh. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Are these from Ed Roman/Abstract guitars by any chance?

Wow!
I don't know what to think.
Can't tell if I like the design or not. Quite unique that's for sure!
Posted by: berko May 24 2009, 08:27 PM
Does that arch provide extra sustain or more depth to the sound? Or is it just pure... ehm... design? These are weird for sure

Somebody knows what's the utility of the bar that's under the fretboard?
Posted by: AlexLion May 25 2009, 07:23 PM
Maybe a handle ?
Posted by: kahall May 25 2009, 08:12 PM

i don't think that it would sustain properly, if so it would stil be hard to play
i think its there to do tapped harmonic

Try to hit there, maybe with a nail
I`m pretty sure even my skinny fingers won`t fit there!

Maybe have a 39 frets guitar will make you save a lot of money instead of buying Rusty Cooley's 8 string signature that has an A higher
Posted by: Ramiro Delforte May 27 2009, 02:34 AM
Those are like really futuristic designs, would be nice to hear how they sound
Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 27 2009, 12:27 PM
With that much of wood, they should have a great potential I guess if the wood is HQ!

I'm guessing that it could possibly increase the Sustain as there's more Wood mass to resonate...

Reminds me a little of Uli Jon Roths "Sky Guitar", which also has a huge number of frets and comes in a 7-string version. I remember reading somewhere that his frets above the 24th fret are spaced at whole tones for easier access. Not sure if that's true or not.

It's true alright!!!!
Here is what Uli had to say about his Sky guitar: "Back when I was with the Scorpions, a guitar builder in Brighton offered to make me my own guitar any way I would like, and I thought, 'What a concept!'. I questioned everything that had come before and tried to improve on it. I wanted more range, so I came up with a body shaped like a teardrop, but it wasn't visually appealing, so I added an S shape to the teardrop to give it more balance. I had the builder put as many frets on the neck as he possibly could. On my current Sky guitar, the frets above the 24th fret are placed in whole tones because it is too difficult to play above there with the frets placed so closely together. I didn't want to lose the warm sound of the neck pickup, so we mounted the pickup under the fretboard," he continues. "That actually worked and sounded good. My pickups (Mega-Wing) are made by John Oram, who figured out how to make a pickup that provides full-sounding tone and great sustain in the guitar's highest range. The next step was to add more range in the bass end, so I came up with the idea of a seven-string guitar."

Those are so over-the-top ugly that i actually want one

Lol, what the hell is this???
Posted by: midnight May 31 2009, 12:13 AM
I would break that wood bar on that first guitar in the first week. I'd be nervous playing it...probably costs a lot.
Someone out there would like these, I guess. Painfully ugly to look at for me. Not very inspiring...they are inspiring to throw on some striped spandex pants for some reason though.

If Ed Roman is half the asshole I've heard he is, they probably play as bad as they look.

The luthier is called Andy DeMetriou - he also used to make violins and some very beautiful acoustic guitars. He made my custom way back in the late 80s - though mine is a much more standard shape (LP Junior type).
Andy gave up being a luthier a few years ago as his health suffered from exposure to all the paint and stuff - I think he now teaches master wood working skills in the SE of England. He's a really nice and friendly guy
