I'd go even further Gab - Practice it clean as you may well be re-amped.

There are lots of ways in a studio to get a big sound from wall of sound as Todd has suggested, Haas effect, multiple amping, reverb and compression tricks, good eq'ing, good panning and so on. In a studio you need to make the guitar sit in the mix and too much distortion just doesn't work. Too much distortion doesn't produce a big sound, all it does is take up sonic space, muddies the mix and masks other instrument/vocals. Too much non tube distortion is even worse as you more often than not also get phase, preringing and timing issues.
