I've heard this music concept(Motiffs/Motives) used at other guitar sites, so I wanted to learn more about it here at GMC, but my searches here at GMC came up empty. From the basic info I know, its a short musical phrase used repeatedly in a song, but in different intervals(Or in simplified guitar terms - different scales). An example would be- Beethoven’s 5th symphony(du du du DUUUU).

Are there any lessons that address this, or is there maybe a different term it could be called, or any instructors want to do a lesson on it. Seems like an important concept which would be helpful to us here at GMC.

Thanks,
Michael

It's really just an idea that you want to drill into a listeners head.

Imagine you are a writer. A motif would be kind of a theme that you want to want to convey, and you write around this theme. In music, its kind of the same. You have a phrase that conveys a certain feeling to your listener, and you write your piece around this. You don't write it around the actual phrase, though it is repeated at certain times, but you write it around the idea that the phrase represents.

Beyond that I don't really know of any concrete theory surrounding motifs.

Motiffs, can kinda be explained, but it can't really be taught to any significant degree. The real issue here is not guitar playing, but composing which are two totally different things. Composing is almost purely creative, sure you may use some theory references to help you work out certain things but the song itself comes directly from your creative half.

Building a motiff of which to center on has to be something personal. What are you trying to convey to your listeners? What are you trying to convey to yourself? It could be a simple melodic phrase that makes someone take notice of what you are doing, or it could be elaborate that takes someone on a journey of sound.

Ultimately though as i said its up to you as the player to determine that, we can't crawl in your head and flip the creative switch. We can inspire you, guide you, and make suggestions, but in the end your creativity is the deciding factor.

Daniel

Every single one of my lessons so far published has Motives and development.

Watch them and let me know if you have any questions.

A lot of Opeth (newer Opeth i should say) has a motif throughout the song...I wish I knew their catalog better and I could tell you the songs names but I don't =(
