the most embarrissing moment in my musical history was when we played at a local semi private summer party. there were about 150 people there and we were the only band. we really rocked and it was a great gig until we reached our 4th song. it has a part were i use the whammy bar quite heavy and this time I managed to break a string and the guitar went totally out of tune. Normal this is no problem because I always have a second guitar with me but this day I didn´t (I just thought I never needed one before and we didn´t have so much space in the car so I left it at home). To make the whole deal perfect I had the packages with the new strings in the other guitar case.
At the end all the guests were really pissed and we didn´t get money and had to sneak out and leave the party. I felt like the greatest idiot on earth. Fortunately I had great band members at the time and over a few beers we could "forget" the whole story and go on with our musical life......
but I learned my lesson and now have everything double checked before we go to a gig.
A fine example of Sods Law at work.
The ONE time you didn't carry spares and ,of course, that is the time you needed them!
A valuable lesson though. I have a grab bag (actually a small aluminium case) stuffed with Fuses, Valves, cables and some tools that I always take with me. I keep spare sets of strings in all my guitar cases so I always have them with me. I also have a wind up flashlight in there too as it can be very dark in the wings.
I suppose that having something like that happen to you is part of the learning process and means, as you rightly say, that in future you are better prepared. Thank you Wollace for sharing that.
