So I`m sitting here at work bored outa my brain and wondering what others do for a living.

I`m a Depot Manager for an independent Fuel distributor here in the UK (www.fueloils.co.uk) , I`m also qualified in Occupational Health & Safety so look after the company as a whole for that. Its a company started over 40 years ago and still looked after like a baby by my father-in-law, it may seem like nepotism but I`ve worked here for nearly 7 years doing pretty much the same job and met my wife obviously through work about 4 years ago so thats not how I got to work here, believe me its not really a perk having your father-in-law as your boss!

So really all I do is take orders over the phone from customers, route the lorries that are based here and generally am a sounding board for everyones moans and groans, the depot really runs itself so I dont have to do a great deal of "managing", the depot where I work is just a very small satellite operation from the main head office, the other part of my job involves visiting delivery locations to check drivers safety issues etc and general reporting (lots of paperwork sad.gif ) I quite enjoy the visiting part although some people arnt exactly thrilled to see me when they know they have a site that breaks every regulation in the book and I`m about to cut off their supply.

So thats my job, its not exactly what I would like to be doing but it pays the bills/mortgage etc

What do you guys do for a living?, I know lots of you are at college and university too so what are you studying?

I'm a music student - classical primarily.
I study composition and orchestration first and foremost, with other modules in psychology of music, analysis and performance.

I basically write crazy atonal noise and justify it with pretentious academic nonsense.

I'm also currently working for a company creating a Web Page for them, just over the xmas holidays.

I'm a full time student. When I graduate in 2 years, I'd probably be working as a surgical tech. It could possibly pay the bills easily. As a side, I want to do something like make a gore movie or something. It would be nice to have a band also. Play in small gigs having fun practicing etc. Nothing serious. I'd rather play in small gigs than the huge once. It makes the music much more energetic and intense.

I study translation and interpreting!
My main goal in life is to be helpful to those in need.
Don't think I can do much alone, so I believe in unity.
But I must say that lately guitar practicing is sweeping away
a lot of the sadness I feel about our human condition.
If I had to pick a play to represent myself
I'd definitely choose "Waiting for Godot"...
Sorry, don't want to bring you all down smile.gif
Cheers, Eddie

Something similar goes on here....the difference is just that something happens all the time here so what i am waiting for is actually a bit of time to practice -> same as Godot laugh.gif laugh.gif -> it's just not coming! sad.gif sad.gif

EDIT: hate typos!

I do paid work 1 day a week supervising and examining PhD students and undertaking and publishing my own research as articles in academic journals and as books. I also do unpaid work copy-editing and technical editing for a number of academic journals and publishers.

Non-academic stuff - I run a small recording studio focused on recording, re-recording and mixing (I don't tend to Master) and also assist my wife when she needs audio/recording engineering on her media projects. (Her non academic work is media training and PR.)

Some stuff I've done in the past - senior management consultant for a big international consultancy; various middle and senior management roles in different organisations; analytical chemist/lab manager specialising in identification and quantification of ultra low level trace pesticides by MS; session musician; roadie; various roles in recording studios; bar/pub work.
