Guitars For Right-handers, did they get it backwards?

I've been mulling this over for a while now. Statistically speaking, there are more right-handers than left handers, yet more people use their right hand for picking than fretting. Why do you think that is? If I could go back in time and talk to myself, first I'd slap myself in the head for going with the flow, and then I would have bought a "left handed" guitar cause my right hand is just stronger and more coordinated all the way around - given I'm right-handed.

Hmm this is interesting as I seen left handed people playing right handed guitars and claiming its more natural for them to play like that.

To me its logical to use right hand (more developed one) for picking/fingerpicking. I kinda find that picking part harder and more force/control demanding then left hands fretting. I get that for beginners fretting can be harder then picking at first but I'm not sure in the long run its worth using "more developed hand" for fretting rather then picking tasks.

Perhaps the guy who invented the guitar was actually a left-handed man, but constructed it for right-handed people tongue.gif

Imo while playing guitar, the right hand does most of the work:p It's what keeps the rhythm flowing etc:) So to me it's only common sense to use the more developed hand for that:p

Speaking from someone that has been forced to change to playing lefthanded
I never get to play good guitars of the shelf
the guitars i do have just happened to feel comfortable enough, but i still have to do alot of tweaking
the up side is ,since i'm a carpenter i will most likely never cut of my fretting fingers

The left brain, the math, science, logic, hemisphere, controls the right hand.
The right brain, the expressive whining emotional wreck hemisphere, controls the left hand.

Which hemisphere would YOU want to be in charge of strumming on time over and over during early exercises? The left hemisphere loves that kind of repetitive crap and is a perfect gamma-moron for the job.

It's not backwards, promise smile.gif

True that the "wirering", in this case, crosses making the motor cortex of the left hemisphere responsible for right-sided motor function, and the right for left-sided.
But you can't draw a conclusion like that based on this. There are MANY connections between the two hemispheres, different areas of the brain etc. It's a real big mess. Everything has to work together to make normal functioning possible so to speak.

Also there is a certain plasticity to brain, i.e. if you remove the entire left hemisphere, where the speech center (in most cases) is located, the right hemisphere will after some time take over.

Funny you should mention it.

Years ago doctors tried to treat patients suffering from severe epileptic seizures by cutting the biggest connection between the cerebral hemispheres (the corpus callosum) in a procedure called an corpus callosotomy.
Doing this resulted in a split-brain condition, preventing seizures originating in one hemisphere to spread to the other.
But a lot of problems was connected with this procedure, so they had to stop doing it.

One of the reported problems was the "Alien Hand syndrome", where some patients have reported that one of their hands have tried to choke them in their sleep.
It is believed that in split-brain patients one hemisphere will take control. So some people see AHS as a sign of desperation from the repressed hemisphere due to it not being able to express itself.

Google it, interesting stuff.

That being said, I wouldn't mind Petrucci's right brain controlling my fretting hand! laugh.gif

AFAIK whilst there is an asymmetry wrt which side of the brain controls which part of the body I don't think many (if indeed any) neuroscientists would ascribe to the left brain (rational, calculative) right brain (feeling, emotional) dichotomy. Most regard it as a popular myth.

Check out Dick Dale he plays a right handed guitar the wrong way round but does not change the strings around, ie the thinner strings are on top!! Even Jimmi Hendrix didnt do that!

He has had to invent his own cords and so on. Truely unique!

So left handed players will never be as creative as right handed players? mellow.gif

Of course they will. Even if the statement was true, there are organizational differences between "right handed brains" and "left handed brains".
If we take the speech center example of my previous post, this is located in the right hemisphere more frequently in left-handers. But still not in all cases.

It's impossible to draw such conclusions on much this.

As Buzz has said, it's not quite as cut and dried as that. Also you have that entirely backwards. Left handed people often end up in the more creative professions.
