Hi guys! In this post I would like to share some tips that helped me and could really help you to compose killer songs. The tips will be shared weekly. I hope that you enjoy it.
Tip 1. Listening & Analisys LISTEN to a lot of music, not only the style that you want to play or compose, you have to listen to varied music. Some of the most original music appeared thanks to the combination of elements from different styles. It helps even more if you do a good analisys of the songs. ANALIZE the structure, the progressions, the sound textures (tone, fxs, arrangements). Try to analize at least one song per day and write down the analisys in a notebook to be able to compare, find similarities and differences between the songs. Finally, if you are listening to the radio or watching tv, use your guitar to follow the songs and learn the progressions. All these things will help you to understand more the music that you hear and to be more creative. CREATIVITY IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE TRAINED! Tip 2. Always be ready to record You have to always be ready to record an idea. No matter where you are, THE GREAT IDEAS CAN COME WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT THEM. You could be in bed, in the supermarket, at work, in the bathroom... You have to be able to record any MELODY, RIFF or GROOVE that comes to your mind BEFORE YOU FORGET IT! So what you need to have is something SIMPLE AND PORTABLE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO RECORD AUDIO. You can record the idea with your voice, hands or even knocking a door with a ruler (when the idea is a rhythm or groove). There are many portable recorders but also there are many cellphones that can record audio. I personally use my cellphone for this, but I know many other more sophisticated systems for this. Later, when you have some time you can sit in front of the computer and continue the idea using any multitrack software. The same goes for LYRICS, you always need to have something to write phrases or even words down when they appear.
