GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Who's In For A Little Challenge? :)

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 25 2013, 10:17 AM

Last evening, at my video chat session, we have discussed about emulating other instruments with the guitar, in order to develop our articulation skills and work on ear training, thus, I thought it would be a nice idea to throw in a little challenge for EVERYONE who wishes to try it smile.gif

Here's an amazing song that you most probably know:

Based on the video chat replay and notes found here: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=39243&view=findpost&p=663229 choose a saxophone phrase that you like from the song I posted above - it can really be any phrase that you like or a lick, and record yourself while playing it on your guitar.

Challenging? It can be, but the results will surely aid you in becoming an expressive player!

PM me or write your questions here! I already have two students which are interested: Monica and Doug! Let's see who else is in?

Two students interested??? NOOOOO laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hmmmm....you have an interesting idea smile.gif You know very well how much I love this song (Lily Was Here), but as I told you yesterday, it's not easy at all.
About this song, I think you want, we to play the both parts: I mean all song it's a discussion between saxophone and guitar.

One big problem for me. I start a very strict training and hard with Darek to change my right hand position. At this moment I'm not able to play anything. It's a very hard period for me and very frustrating. It's impossible to make something expressive because with my new position I can't take care about difference between pick strenght (hard & soft).

I will try but I can't promise you that I will do that smile.gif

I am sure you can do just great - you are always too hard on yourself smile.gif That's not a bad thing, but if you push it too much, it can become a bad thing. Be self critical but don't bury yourself wink.gif I only want the sax parts - pick a lick or two and emulate it with the song or without it - if it's without the song, let me know what it's timing is.

Hey guys, gonna give this a try myself. I can't believe I've never heard of this song but it is awesome! I love the slow, nod your head style, groove and the lady on the sax is absolutely amazing.

Started messing around with a couple of the licks last night and it is really tough to mimic the expression of the sax on the guitar. The sax itself is soooo smooth.

Looking forward to hearing what everybody comes up with!

Great to see you here with us mate! I remember this song a long time now - I was not even 10 years old when I first heard it and it stuck to my mind since then. I figured some of the first licks myself and I am very curious to see what you guys come out with! biggrin.gif

Here's what I have so far. I'll warn you it's not much and it's pretty rough. Working on the following phrase now.

The lick is at 1:51 in the video.

Good take gregc1.

*Interesting topic in that the riffs Candy's playing are (mostly) all minor pentatonic and blues licks. It's all blues guitar stuff. It's even in Em biggrin.gif. Kinda cool to play guitar lines via a sax players re-interpretation of them. Very post modern.

Here's mine. It's the line she does at 1:34 ...

Ha! Awesome work you two! biggrin.gif I would not mute and separate the note so obviously, Greg wink.gif But the interpretation is VERY nice! biggrin.gif Same for Ken! I'll record one too tongue.gif

You're right Cosmin, it was pure sloppiness on my part. I'm going to redo it and try to add the next phrase in as well.

I've been trying to just work a single line out, but my I'm bad at this. I will upload it later when I record it.

Here's an updated version. I made the guitar a little dirtier and added in the next phrase. The second phrase is not totally right but I think it's pretty close.

This is really fun and I love to try and emulate sax solos on my guitar. I haven't played much at all in the last 7 weeks or so and I thought this would be a good way to get back into practicing. I know I can tighten it up some more but I thought I would share what I have so far.
What do you think? smile.gif
