They are probably the most overlooked component for the guitar setup, but...
Do guitar cables make a big difference in the quality of tone? I have changed over to using 4 Cable setup for my Pod HD500 and would like are to at least replace two of my temp cables with new ones. -------------------- Play Games Arcade Take a break, Play Games! What a great topic!
They are indeed very overlooked - when I think about it, I have been using one Stagg guitar cable (made in china) for over 5 years now both on stage in studio etc etc. I think cable does influence your tone but I'm not technical so I can't explain it. All I know is that I did hear differences between cables few times. Once it was so obvious, I had one cable professionally re soldered and it never sounded the same. It was kind dead sounding and had lower volume output... I'm not sure what caused it. I think it's best to just buy high quality cables that will last for years then to replace them so often. In the manner of this topic, I found out recently that there is a special power cable that supposedly influences tone as well? Bassist Victor Wooten was marketing it. Is there something true in the story? I had hum i my long pedalchain before switching to neutrik mogami cables Yeah - I remember when I did the first A/B test of my pedalboard vs going straight to amp. It really shows how long cables + lots of pedals EAT your tone! It just gets more dull and noisy. -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net

I'm assuming the amp power cable would be the biggest factor?
Next, the actual guitar to amp and effect cables? Some are really expensive but have life time warranty. The store guarantees anything wrong with them (apart from cutting them in half with a pair of scissors, aww man I was looking forward to doing that), even if 10+ years later I can return them and get a brand new replacement free. Are Planet Waves Custom Series Guitar Cables any good? Gold-plated plugs, 100% impenetrable shielded, low capacitance, In = Out Signal Transparency. -------------------- Play Games Arcade Take a break, Play Games! I say it's a marketing trick to a big extent. However, the answer to question is : yes, cables can make a difference. However, other parts of the signal chain can make even greater difference, so unless you're using top notch boutique components, and need your cables to work flawlessly for years - there is no need for better ones.
I'm against cheap cables tho, they can break or loose contact. That is one of the worst nightmares on stage. This post has been edited by Ivan Milenkovic: May 16 2011, 07:03 PM -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Good cables are important but it's easy to spend as much on cables as on pedals if your not careful. I've really been impressed with the PRO CO LIFELINES. I've been using them for a while and they've been perfect so far. They use Neutrik connectors and have good shielding and soldering. Here is a link. They are not very expensive at all especially considering the quality of the parts and workmanship. Here is a link to the model I"m using.
