i'm sorry if this is a silly question.

i'm considering getting a new notebook.

i've heard lots of things about issues about recording with sound cards that are not "ASIO". you can get latency and delay in your recording, etc.

it is my understand that the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook (Link) is an "ASIO" sound card. one of the notebooks i was considering has this, and the fact that it is "ASIO" caught my eye.

i plan to make small recordings via the Lexicon Alpha USB Desktop Studio (link) plugged into a recording program on my pc.

my question is if this "ASIO" soundcard will be benificial if i'm not plugging anything into it. using the lexicon i would connect to the PC via USB, instead of a line in on the Soundblaster.

thank you for reading. please tell me i'm not making any sense, or if it sounds like i have no idea what i am talking about.

It sounds like you know what you are talking about and think about your actions logically wink.gif

I think this interface can be a soundcard on its own, so you don't need to use the SOundblaster at all - which is a good thing. In your host application where you do all the recording etc. just choose it as your main ASIO card. The Lexicon has its own ASIO drivers, and the hardware is - off course a lot better for DAW than X-FI which is a more mainstream gamer card. You'll be ok with this one wink.gif
Also try the Toneport UX1 if you haven't allready. It is practically the same device, but Tonport is 20$ expencier because it has Gearbox. I think it is worth it.

thank you for your reply.

yes, i was looking into toneport as well. the only thing that is stopping me from buying it is that i already have a POD i can use, so the lexicon is possibly a better deal right now.

i had no idea things like the UX1 and lexicon had ASIO drivers themselves! upon second thought, that's probably why they are so popular! i was under the impression they were popular just because it gave you a line in for your guitar / line out for monitors / etc!

i'm glad i was right. a few months ago every aspect of recording had me confused... but i've slowly been educating myself through GMC / google searches!
