GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Find Me An Amp! :)

Posted by: Marshmall0wz Aug 24 2008, 11:05 PM

So after a disappointing topic on Bugera amps ive decided to let the people choose! If you love finding amps you'll like this, if not go enjoy your guitar haha smile.gif So here are the specs.

REQUIRED
No Hybrids, No Software and No Modelers

$700-850 All-Tube Amp

Separate Clean, Crunch, and Lead Channels

Footswitch for channel switching (FX Loop is great too)

Individual Low, Mid, and High EQ on EACH channel

Volume and Gain control on every channel, but the clean channel doesn't require gain control

EL84 Tubes are preferred but most general quality tubes are fine

Master Volume, Reverb, and Presence Controls.

FX Loop on back

Back controls can vary

If you can find me an amp you are a winner. You don't win anything but you still are a winner:)

THANK YOU SO MUCH GMC

-cheers

EDIT: I prefer the knobs that are round and textured unlike the ones on a vox valvetronics amp.

come on guys YOU CAN DO IT!

No offense to you, but you know what you want in an amp better then anyone on GMC...

Start googling and checking out guitar amp websites tongue.gif

With hundereds of countries in the world, are we talking about an amp to be bought in the US here??? huh.gif
If you update your profile to tell which country you're from that's a great guide in many cases.

Assuming we are in the US now. I skipped your long list of demands and only stopped for "$850 tube amp" and picked up that you like EL84 tubes so we're going for a british tone.

I'll suggest a few

Peavey Classic 30. Got one myself, bluesy and jazzy and it can rock pretty hard too.
Rivera Pubster 25W no EL84's in it but it's a Rivera wink.gif
Orange Tiny Terror. Don't know how the Orange Rocker 30 is priced (too expensive I guess) but that's a killer!!

I spend alot of time looking at amps as I am very interested in all the makes and models out there smile.gif I think MickeM's advice is right on because when you have a low to medium budget you cant get eveything your looking for, its that simple ! sad.gif

The good news is, if you like EL84 (british sounding) tone, there are more amps in your budget with those tube types than there are 6L6 and 6V6 (american sounding) driven amps.

I think you may like the Peavey Classic 30, there i also the Vox AC15 custom classic (british sounding but not high gain), the Orange Tiny Terror of course (very good amp), the Fender Blues Junior is EL-84 driven and is very good but again its not high gain.

IMO the best value for money would be a Peavy Valveking, it has 6L6 tubes in the power stage, but the amp will do both american and British tones very well for you. But from what you have said, I think the Peavey Classic 30 would be more your type of amp.

I myself would like either a Mesa Boogie Express 5:50, or a Fender Supersonic, but those are ALOT of money so im going to have to get saving wink.gif

Where do you live? Prices vary in different countries, and not all of countries even have different lines on disposal, your budget tag is relative to that information.

Posted by: Marshmall0wz Aug 25 2008, 03:26 PM

Id really like a fender supersonic but have no cash. I live in the U.S.

Posted by: Strungout180 Aug 25 2008, 03:56 PM

I'd highly recommend that if you know what you'd really like to save up a bit more and get it instead. Otherwise you'll just end up still wanting it anyways.

Your Vox ad30vt should be more than good enough to sustain you for now until you can save the extra 400 or so for a Fender Supersonic.

As far as suggestions near your price range the Laney L20h looks very nice and I believe uses El84's, and musicianfriend.com has the b-stock Supersonic heads on sale for 900 right now, so if you can deal with a cosmetic flaw or two its very close to your price range.

Hmm, I would definitely wait and save more money to buy a good tube amp if I were you. You have that Vox that I didn't see before. It is a good amp, and IMO it is not worth it to blow away 800 bucks for a cheap tube amp, specially with so demanding features. Be sure it will be low in quality.

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Aug 25 2008, 10:23 PM

Definitely be a little patient and save some more money in order to buy an amp you want!

I paid around 1000 euros for my Marshall TSL60 head, but it has no cabinet though.

H&K statesman dual84 or quad84
A lot of sounds from clean (with "twang" button) to Marshall-like.

Try it, you'll be surprised.
These amps get great reviews and are not that expensive.
I have the dual84, which is 20 (very loud) watts, it costs around € 800,- so probably less in $$

If you already know what you want (but the price is high for the moment) just save the money for it. In a month or two after buying something else, you will start wanting your dream equipment again.

Specially when living in US, I think it worths to save money for top notch equipment. In most other countries, instruments and accessories are sooo much more expensive than US...

k ill start saving and keep looking.

I am picking up a Peavey Ultra Plus all tube head on thursday "unheard". Just read about it and most people love it.
This will be my first tube amp (first amp ever actually, podfree wahoooo!) , I can post some sound files this weekend.
It's like a mix between Mesa Boogie Dual Rec and a Marshall. With an EQ in the loop it rocks so I hope so! smile.gif

I paid 600$ for it. Check here for information:

wise words. I always recommend trying the exact amp you wanna buy, or else you can have some serious problems later on. So why taking the risk right ?

I agree with this statement 100% !

I don't know about you but I don't have million $ on the side to spend on things I don't try out first biggrin.gif

What kind of amp do you need - performing, recording , practice or combination of things?
