Stupid Guitars... [need Technical Help]

Hi there GMC,

I have 3 Ibanez electric guitars I'll state the problems with each, and any advice you guys could give would be appreciated. (If I'm just being fussy let me know tongue.gif)

Ibanez VBT700:
The action was set up medium/low from the shop (iMuso.co.uk). How low is low before I get fret buzz?
The tone pot came loose recently so when I turn it it feels really loose. How can I stop this / fit it back in?

Ibanez IC200:
There's crackling when I turn the tone pot. How easy is this to get rid of?
The action is really high. Again how low is low before I get fret buzz?

Ibanez EX360:
The input jack is temperamental.
The volume pot crackles.
The 5 way switch often needs fiddling with to 'select' a pickup.
There isn't enough output - even with a Seymour Duncan Invader. (It sound comparable to stock - it's a regular pickup not designed for tremolo systems. This shouldn't make a difference right? Would I just need a volume pot?)
The tremolo system (Ibanez TRS Trem is all it says) is really stiff. It's also really noisy when I bend it like it creaks like hell. Is it possible to oil this or something?
I know how to set up the action but the screws are just too tight. What should I do?

I dunno sometimes I feel like guitars are too much work to keep sounding/feeling at their best.

Well you have a bunch of problems . tongue.gif
The tone knob crackle could be an easy fix by spraying pot cleaner on it or at worst just buying a new tone pot (not expensive at all). The action you keep saying how low is low before it buzzes,,well it's just like you said low but not buzzing.I would take it to a guitar place and tell them you want the action as low as it can go without buzzing and it comes back very sweet, also not expensive.I will leave the other questions to someone else who may explain it in better terms. tongue.gif

I would take all your guitars and have them worked on ,its the easyest and best way to get them back to shape.Your trem could be making those noises because of old or worn tremolo springs on the back.If it iis a floyd rose style bridge you may want to try F-SPACING on the humbucker's you buy.Just make sure when you decide what type of humbucker you like just look for the f-spaced version of it.

Haha thanks for that, I just think it might be worth getting a 1000KOhm volume and tone pot put in all 3 of my guitars. That'd eliminate that problem immediately.

For the EX360 jack problem - sounds like it may either be a bad solder on the jack input or maybe a bad jack lead - this can also result in intermittent signal to the pick up selector as well.

Cheers,
Tony

I'm about to buy some tone pots and a new input jack - I suppose it could do with a good rewiring. I'm sure (since the IC200 is HH and the EX360 IS HSS) the tone pots are 500k anyway. Should I get 750k or even 1m tone pots?

Also would WD40 work on a tremolo system tongue.gif...

I know many or most were answered already but anyway..

Ibanez VBT700:
The action was set up medium/low from the shop (iMuso.co.uk). How low is low before I get fret buzz?
Well, the answer is that it's right before you get a fret buzz... Just keep lowering until you get the buzz and then raise it a tiny bit.
The tone pot came loose recently so when I turn it it feels really loose. How can I stop this / fit it back in?
I belive there's a small screw on the side of the knob that needs to be tightened.

Ibanez IC200:
There's crackling when I turn the tone pot. How easy is this to get rid of?
Lub it with electric spray (don't know the eng word for that spray, contact spray ot something)
The action is really high. Again how low is low before I get fret buzz?
it's right before you get fret buzz :-)

Ibanez EX360:
The input jack is temperamental.
I don't know what that means but saw it was answered already so...
The volume pot crackles.
Contact spray, resolder or get a new pot.
The 5 way switch often needs fiddling with to 'select' a pickup.
Contact spray, resolder or get a new switch if that doesn't work.
There isn't enough output - even with a Seymour Duncan Invader. (It sound comparable to stock - it's a regular pickup not designed for tremolo systems. This shouldn't make a difference right? Would I just need a volume pot?)
It should not affect the output in general. What could happen is that a string may come outside the pu's range and die. You'll notice that as you bend and the tone suddenly dies. Could be a bigger problem if you try to keep the action as low as you do. If you're set on using a pu that's not F-spaced i belive you'd get better tone and a tone that doesn't suddenly die when you bend f ex with a higher action.
The tremolo system (Ibanez TRS Trem is all it says) is really stiff. It's also really noisy when I bend it like it creaks like hell. Is it possible to oil this or something?
Take it off, clean it, lubricate everything, put it together and put it back. Note when you take it apart that the saddles have numbers, be sure to put them back where they came from.
I know how to set up the action but the screws are just too tight. What should I do?
Maybe a drop of that WD40 and an allen key with a longer shaft (stick it into an ironbar to make the shaft longer) and a bit more force. Should be completely unscrewed and lubricated aswell together with the rest of the tremolo.

I dunno sometimes I feel like guitars are too much work to keep sounding/feeling at their best.
Hmm... maybe you should stop bringing your guitars to the beach and keeping then dug down in the dirt during winter :lol

I would just get the same pots that's on. It's written on the old post what they are.
