I think it's from the 1930s (or early 40s?).
Made in Los Angeles by Rickenbacher 'Electro' instruments (later to be Rickenbacker). My first Lap Steel. Haven't decided on a tuning yet. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Is that solid wood?

It's hollow metal (cast aluminum) and it's blue/grey sunburst.
The pick up is what's known as a 'horse shoe' pickup http://www.frets.com/HomeShopTech/Products...horseshoes.html *I'll add that Rickenbacker were the first to produce electric guitars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frying_pan_(guitar) and that Adolph Rickenbacher was a cousin of WWI flying ace (and auto racer/automobile manufacturer) Eddie Rickenbacker. @Bogdan ... I bought it from a friend. They are actually very easy to find here as almost all the guitar companies manufactured them. Also they are not really expensive (unless they're in mint condition with original case). They usually come in 6, 8 and 10 string models. The most common tunings are open E, open G and C6 (CEGACE low to high and variations) or E6. You play them with a bar or a 'steel' - a slide that's solid.
@Gab ... I will make a vid of me playing it when I actually can play something passable. Here's a very traditional application ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdTa9MzgF6s And not so traditional ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzbA79ptJP8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAbbgSKUZB4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iblfvzn7Rc8 This post has been edited by klasaine: Nov 13 2013, 06:14 PM -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Just found this on fleabay...only 16 minutes left to bid : 1 bid so far $3400 'Those' go for a lot as they are generally regarded to be the first production electric guitars - affectionately known as the frying pan. The one I have, though fairly aged and archaic looking, is quite common. It probably even had a matching amp. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Nice, I really have a desire to get a pedal steel guitar (my favourite instrument ever) but apart from the price, the dedication, brain power and lifetime it would take to master it puts me off a little!

Me too! Just 6 strings with the slide (no pedals, no knee levers) is daunting enough. I have (sort of) settled on a tuning though: DADF#BE - blues/modal on the bottom, a little western swing on top. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine
