GMC Forum _ Todd Simpson _ #44 Beyond Vanhalen Tapping Ii

Posted by: Todd Simpson Sep 8 2018, 05:22 PM

Let's dig back in to our tapping / hammering and this time, let's use fret traverse on both hands. In other words, we are going to move both hands to new positions at different points during this licks. If you have done the previous tapping licks, this one should be no problem at all. Hopefully by now your hands are getting used to muting while tapping and getting used to striking/pulling.

*Keep a good mute so that you don't get errant string noise. We are lifting the left hand entirely off the fretboard to get our open string note. So right hand muting is important here.

*NOTE: Keep it smooth and under control. If you find you are losing control, slow down just a pinch.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS : Keep this one under control. Keep it clean. Repeat as needed

Hello Todd,

Here's Take 1 of QL44. The hardest part is moving down the neck (towards headstock). Rip it apart sarge.

I think I should get at least a level up for the best ugly face laugh.gif

You should get double points for that guitar face!!! smile.gif You have a good handle on this tapping stuff which is great to see! I remember a while back that you didn't much care for it and now your getting a much better hang of it. You've got this lick. I wanted to see if you guys could fret traverse with both hands while tapping. You did it!! There are bits that could still be improved, you have a bit of string noise when you make the switch (that will go away as you get more comfy moving position while keeping a right hand mute), which is why that shift is there. To make you move your hand and since you cant mute with the left hand, as this is happening on a high string, if there is a gap in your right hand mute this will show it. Something to work on as you work this lick. Also, keep running this and it will get faster with time. The mute, and the speed will both get better as you go. But you've got the lick. Nice!! You just...

BINGO!!! You've got tapping SKILLLLZZZ!!! These are well beyond the usual VanHalen type of thing. The advanced versions of these tapping licks in this group require a good bit of dexterity and control. If you rush it, and don't give each strike and each pull enough time to make a note, the lick starts sounding like it's missing notes. The good news is that you play it evenly and well spaced so each strike and pull off can be heard. This one requires you to make a left hand adjustment as well as a right hand adjustment, which can get tricky. You adapt quickly to it and then it's off to the races!!! Well played!!!! You just....

Impressive!!! This one requires you to keep synch and tempo while you move both hands on the fretboard AND do a pull of to an open string. So it adds a bunch of tapping bits together. You didn't miss a beat or a note. It's great to see you tear through these with such grace and skill. I was afraid that I'd created a bunch of "Instructor Only" type licks that folks couldn't really play so each time I see a GMCer really KRUSH it, I"m a happy guy.

You just...

Nice one!! This one puts all of our tapping bits together. It requires you to move both hands up and down the fretboard. Tapping can get a lot more tricky. It's far easier to do play the EVH style of tapping when you play in one spot. When you start moving both hands around the neck, things can get really demanding. The good news is that you have adapted well to these tapping licks and this one is sorta the capstone. If you can play this, you can play all kinds of tapping licks. Well done and I hope to see all of these bits or at least some of them in your next collab solo!

You just..

LEVELED UP!!
