GMC Forum _ Darius Wave _ Poor Puppy Collaboration - Darius Wave
Posted by: Darius Wave Mar 25 2013, 02:34 PM
Welcome to my first ever collaboration at GMC called
"Poor Puppy" collaboration
In this one I would like You to work especially on your phrasing. Try to play the sadiest melodies ever. Use whatever You like - clean, crunch or heavy distorted tone. Please - make shure Your guitar is in tune. Try to tune it on frets (not on open strings). Backing track is exported with precise fit to the time measure. You can import it to Your Daw, set the tempo to 125 bpm and move the backingtrack drawing exactly to the point zero of the session. This will give You perfect synchro and will make my mixing work much easier.
This is an audio collaboration. All You have to do is post here Your take (solo mixed with backing track) for reference and send me only the guitar solo track (remember to export file exactly from the point zero of time measure in Your DAW)
4/4 Em | Em | C | C | Em | Em | C | D | Em | Em | c | C | Am | Am | B | B |
Key - E-minor
Tempo - 125 bpm
Scales You can use are E-minor + E-harmonic minor (E-harmonic minor is a "must" on the B chord because it contains the D# note).
Example -
Deadline - 07.04.2013
Inspirations:
You can go through some Pink Floyd / David Gilmour's playing to adjust Your feeling to the track.
Collaboration results and final mix available here : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=48561

Hey Darius, I love it. I'm in for sure!
Just a couple questions. I am having trouble with the link to the backing track, it doesn't seem to be working for me just going to a broken page. For the 5 solo slots, should we record over all sections or just focus on recording one of the slots/segments? And finally, the due date. I'm assuming that is April 7th, not July 4th? July 4th doesn't seem logical (4 month collab) but I just wanted to be sure, I know we read dates differently on either side of the pond.

Thanks for the info maaaan! Seems like there was a problem while adding the link to the post as an url. Now it should work fine 07.04.2013 - 7th of April 2013 Waiting for Your aproach Every slot is the same. I will mix them together as a random order. If You're able to sync the track with Your Daw I could easlly cut and move according to the bars...So...everyone can fit the first slot and I will then edit and move

Got it! Link works now.
I figured that was the date but just wanted to double check, and not a problem on the synching to the backing track. Really looking forward to hearing the takes on this one, I really do love this style and Gilmour is one of my all time favorites.

Hey Darius,
hopefully this will bring a tear or two solo starts at 1:11. https://soundcloud.com/patrik-berg-2/darius-collaboration
I have sent you a PM with the guitar only track.

That was beautiful man! sniffle, my sad smiley needs tears
Here is my shot at it Darius. I am glad to be a part of your first collaboration! This is a very emotional backing man thanks , it was hard to stop after 30 seconds of playing time. Poor puppy PS: I just went ahead and played over the same section that Patrik did since you said you could move the tracks around as needed, I hope it's ok , If not let me know [attachment=31335:Poor_Puppy_collab.mp3] [attachment=31336:Poor_Pup..._backing.mp3]

AK Rich...the sound and the whole idea is beautiful...If I could only ask You to correct that over-bend at 1:18 (according to the 1st link). It sound like You played about 1 half step too far (You can hear the major third instead of minor third that should be there Also....1:33...fret buzz. Please correct those two things and this will be great solo

Here's my take on this sad collab.
https://soundcloud.com/gregc1/poorpup-collab
My bare guitar file should be set to start on the first beat of the first measure of the solo section. Also, nice one AK!

Hey thanks Darius! While I agree that the bend at 1:18 is a bit pitchy and slightly sharp, I can't hear that it reaches a major 3rd of G#. When I play it again and check it with my tuner I can only see it being 10 to 15 cents sharp which is closer to the minor 3rd G than the major 3rd G#. I know my ear isn't perfect but I didn't think it was that bad. Could it be that the trem vibrato I used combined with a sharp note took it slightly higher and making it closer to the major 3rd? Anyway, I went ahead and re-recorded it and tried to make it closer to the correct pitch and with a vibrato that wassn't quite as wide as the first take. Also I fixed the buzzing note at 1:33. I have a couple different mixes for you to choose from. I hope one of these mixes works better. Thanks again for the feedback!

Wow! That was truly a great take Greg! And thank you!

Thanks AK! On your 2 re-recordings, I think you nailed it with the second set. So damn spooky sounding and I love the islandy tone. Reminds me of a hunted beach or something.

Cool Darius thanks man! And thank you for bringing the pitch issue to my attention , I probably wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't said anything , and the buzzing note I completely overlooked as well, Good looking out man thanks again!

Here's my take Darius:- https://soundcloud.com/sensiblejones-1/poor-puppy-wbt
nicely done Mr. Jones I see You enjoyed the backing track so much that You didn't left any space for the others ha ha )) I like Your tone and some phrasing concepts but I will have to ask You to redo the thing The part with no drums is where I start the theme. Then Everyone has something like 40 seconds for his solo. Because some of players already did the "very sad playing" parts I would like to ask You for a favor - to do more agressive part (like You did on the bridge pickup in the ending of BT). Please...give Yourself some more breathing the playing...live some more long notes withing those licks....show me Your vibrato ;D That would be great to put Your solo as a breaking part of tension build in the whole mix of all solos

I'll try to find time to make one. Question: Is it ok to let some bending squeal come in just before and a second or two after the time frame? A bit awkward otherwise...?

If Would be great if You could fit the track remembering that someone else will play on the time You wanted to already start You solo, or You will also interfere with next player solo. You can try and maybe I can fin good place within other takes so that could fit well. Send us Your proposition and we'll see how this works.

Goota change Your nick name my friend - Sensitive Jones )) That would be cool for building up the tension
It's very nice to hear how You all squeeze this poor puppy from the inside As You can hear while listening to each other - You all got very uniqe sense of phrasing and feeling emotions according to the backing track. That's gonna be something really cool after mixing

Very nice! I never saw "whammy bar tapping" before. Composition is great, tone is fantastic. I especially fell for the ascending, lightly palm muted, fast lick at 3:08.

Just wanted to inform You that POOR PUPPY MIX will be available this weekend. I had to make things clear - I mean who declared and who realy recorded the solo. I also had to define the order of solos and seems like they all together sound great and build the tension like it should be Thank You for Your nicely done job
