Around 57 MINUTES in he gets to one of the most important bits of music theory. 'Tension and Release". This is something that some players happen upon as a matter of sheer instinct. Some folks have to learn it more by wrote. Either way, it's at the foundation of musical expression. Without it, we just have scales basically. The balance between tension and release is what makes music actually sound like music and not just a collection of notes.
Here is a handy vid where a guy tries to explain some ideas on scale structure and theory. Memorizing the neck/scales is one of the big things that keeps players from making the progress they want to make, it seems. The good news is, it's really not that hard to get started. To wit!

Just a little fun add-on for Phil's "one hour of guitar theory" thread, this time with Jacob Collier covering a lot of topics.
