First exercise was easy for me but the second I have to work on (I worked on an exercise similar to it in the past so my mind keeps going to it).

But the rubber band thing, I remember seeing it from other youtubers and though it was a lame idea, never tried and never will.

I've heard about the rubber band thing before, but I've never tried it.

I think it's an interesting topic though, because you see players such as Max Ostro or Rick Graham with immense control of their pinky, and then I seem to notice someone like Andy James who is less strict in that regard.

Good technique is never a bad thing though. For the sake of comparison:

When I studied classical guitar in college my teacher made me play facing and right up close to a wall. Close enough that the top of both my hands would touch it.
It worked.

I know Rick has talked about his classical teacher and that they were extremely strict about postures etc so I'm pretty sure economy of motion was beat into him.

It's always a good idea to try to keep the fingers close to the strings. It reduces the recovery time between each fretted note. It's the same idea for picking and muting. If you keep your pick close to the string (reduce hand wag) you reduce recovery time for the next strike. Same with muting. If you always keep your hand on or just above the bridge, you can adjust your mute in a split second to provide greater control over dynamics.

A great way to tell if you have "flying pinky" syndrome is just to record video of yourself playing a bit of improv solo where you are mostly just thinking about what to play and not focused as much on technique. When you watch the vid you'll see if your technique is flawed and where it's flawed so that you can isolate and fix any errors smile.gif
