All of a sudden I appear to have developed a problem with holding the pick.

Never really had a prblem with this before but now I just cant seem to hold it right.

It either slipe out of my fingers completely or twists so that it is at the wrong angle, too much or too little is visible ..... I just cant get it right.

Anyone else ever ran into this problem and if so what was the cure.

I suspect that it is because I am attempting to play faster more technical pieces (for me anyway!) but it is so frustrating.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

maybe your to tense because your playing faster and gripping it too tight??

Maybe the pick is old and worn, use a new tortex with the grippy powder...

Try V picks I find they stick to your fingers better.

Dugain have a grrove cut into them so they fit into your fingers...

Thanks Stratman

I think you are right in that I am maybe gripping1 too tight. Also you are right in that I am using a well used Jim Dunlop pick and it has become really quite slippy.

I will have a look for the tortex with grippy powder or the V picks.

cool, good luck...

Just so you know Tortex are made for Jim Dunlop...

It's important not just for your picking, but for your right arm/shoulder and left hand fingers you keep relaxed whilst playing...

There are just 2 problems with pick! Too much tension and to little tension.
So relax your grip, or hold it tight!

Any pick will tend to slip out of hand if you are gripping it tightly. Try to find a balance while practicing, and dont' tense up your hand, or it will slip. Remember that you have to vary the grip tension depending on how hard you pick as well..

When attempting to play faster, slow down and work more on less movement. Less movement equals more speed later on and more control over the pick. It should be controled rather than all over the place. This was my problem when developing speed. The book 'Troy Stetina - Speed Mechanics For Lead Guitar' really helped out.

Keep the pick on the 90 degree angle (not angled up or down a bit) or you will have problems in picking the other direction and have the pick sometimes slip. Also angle slightly towards the bridge, this gives a better sound and grip when playing at speed. Cut the strings with just the tip of the pick, avoid moving away too much, and stay relaxed.

hello my friend
i too have struggled with this till recently
all of the other suggestions are right on the money but i would like to add
slow down until you don't have tension
create a pattern that your fingers can easily memeorize - without you looking at them-this is very neccessary
you will have to focus all your energy on how you hold the pick
get your metronome - if you don't have one ,this is futil - because you will create more problems in the future that will be harder to break
set the click for every note that you will play

this is what happened to me
i was going to fast and so my fingers trying to catch up got tension and the pick would move - causing more tension and so on

this is going to take patience
once you have your pattern and click going , start to focus on the pick and more importantly how your thumb is holding the pick
your thumb should have preesure at the tip , not the base of the first joint--trust me
you will have to focus on your thumb and how your hand looks,if it looks contorted you will always get tension when trying to speed up
did i mention you will have to focus on the pick?
if there is tensoion at the base of your thumb , you are pushing the pick with your hand and this is very bad habit to break
if you use the tip of your thumb , you are gilding the pick over the srtings , this is the correct way - I believe
now it is up to you to take the time to practice
the amount of time it will take is related to how many bad habits your fingers have already memorized
could take months or years . not to discourage you but you will have to make the choice. will it be worth it
it will be. that sort of sounds like yoda
the first time you cross over to speed without tension- it will be worth it
took me two years focussed this way
hope this helps -sorry for my grammer smile.gif

This is exactly what I'm facing when I speed up. The pick slides towards the thumb joint. unsure.gif
And soon enough I notice I'm using my arm in the picking too and probably on my way to an injury .. Then I slow down... and start all over again smile.gif

I know that problem myself, I am playing stone picks and when you sweat on stage they get slippery like soap wink.gif I recently got some Dugain picks and like them a lot, as somebody already mentioned they are carved so you really have a tight grip on them, I am curious how they will work on stage.

You can just cut a couple of grooves over your pick (like eddie van halen stripes pattern - in all directions) with a sharp knife and it will never get slippery again...
