Downtimes in playing happen very often, when you think you can play nothing at all... But sometimes you try to play things you weren't capable to play back then and now you're nailing them effortlesly and if gives you such a boost in motivation. I am always between those two periods: Man, I suck at Guitar and Yeah, I rule the Guitar^^

Its perfectly ok , but with good lessons and practice you are definitly developing your skills..Sometimes its easier to spot progress (once you learn tapping for first time for example) and sometimes its not that easy to spot (developing tone control, muting etc) but the progress i there !!
Don't feel down on those times , just push on and you'll get those solos you wanted to play and than you will need something harder smile.gif With music , its never ending journey to perfection smile.gif

Many times I've had those periods mate, often after doing some hard practice weeks before. Just leave some time to settle things a bit, and push on with practice no matter what. You are advancing even if you don't think so.

Like others have said, unfortunately, you will have these downtimes. You mentioned when you see your teacher, you feel like you have learned nothing at all. Could it be the teacher pushing a bit to hard? Or maybe not offering enough encouragement?

This happens to me too, sometimes you feel that you've done a lot of practicing and you should be playing better, you probably are but you don't notice it because the improvement is somewhere else. For instance your picking speed might be the same, but if you were to hear yourself back a year ago, now it is much cleaner. Your bends might have a more controlled vibrato, little tiny things that don't seem like a lot, but are important.

I never believed this, but now I have proof... Sometimes taking a short break actually makes you better. I have no explanation for why this happens. I had shoulder surgery Nov. 7 and couldn't touch my axe for about ten days. I brushed up on some of Andrew's Theory lessons while sitting around. Now, I'm back playing, and for some strange reason, I'm quicker and more accurate than ever - even with distracting soreness in the shoulder! Can someone explain this?!?! So try to give yourself a break once in a while! At least try - maybe it will work for you, too.

i think if you push yourself too hard and because you had that 10 day break you relaxed more thats what i think i guess

It is normal to feel you are not improving at certain points, however this shouldn't hold you back to keep practicing even harder perhaps.
Some things will be obvious sooner some later. You might not notice things that you are doing bad or good then couple of years later. So find your favorite style of music, artists, check them out, work on your original style, and practice everything that needs to get you where you want to be.
That should be more then enough to feel progress and good about your playing wink.gif

i can totally relate to that..

i have been practicing muris alternate picking lesson, and i could almost do the 60bpm version of it (there is 80 and 100 also).. so when i could almost do the 60 without any errors, i turned it up to 80.. this was of course WAY faster, but i was amazed to see how well i did.. it was by no means good, but giving it a 40% speed increase.. this was great.. i practiced this a couple of days, but was nowhere near being able to complete it at 80bpm..

then one of these "down" periods came.. i didn't even want to touch my guitar.. it took a couple of days, and the first time i picked up the guitar after.. i ran through the lesson at 80bpm with no errors.. i almost couldn't believe it.. it was awesome.. smile.gif

Also, a similar program is called Exploring guitar. You'll find a tutorial by Juan here:

That's the problem, it's really important to approach stuff that's way outta your league!!!
This way you're forced to develop in speed and feel.

Don't bother what the instructor's speed is. Learn the notes, play em in time and gradually speed up.
This is how eveeryone does it!

Best of luck man

Ever lifted weights? It is the same principle. The muscles need to relaxe, so they can store what they learned. Of course, i never do it unless I am forced to it, ( sad.gif )but a two-three day brake is often good for the muscles. smile.gif

From a psychobiological view, it could be explained because connections between neurons in some cases take days or weeks to establish. I'm by no means an expert on the brain but I'm getting there slowly!
