Celtic Music, what makes it sound so distinctive?

I love celtic music and was wondering if anybody knows what makes it so distinctive sounding? Is it using a certain mode or a certain cadence? I would love to hear somebody do an instrumental in this Genre. Thanks for any info and replies. smile.gif
