We all know what it means to emulate another guitar player. It means to deliberately try to sound like them. You could do this by using some of their licks. You could listen and identify particular patterns that they use. Maybe they commonly use the 9th, for example. Maybe they favour certain modes over others. Obviously it's easier to emulate players that have a stronger identity because you have more signature sounds to draw from.
Now, what if I were to play with the idea even more ?
Imagine trying to sound like a famous player emulating another player. If I said to you 'Try to sound like Steve Vai' the chances are that you could probably put something together that resembled him.
Now, what if I said to you 'Try to imagine that you're Steve Vai emulating Yngwie Malmsteen.' Or 'Try to sound like Jeff Loomis emulating Ritchie Blackmore'
Crazy, huh ? So imagine one famous player covering, or trying to sound like, another famous player. Perhaps play with this concept the next time you have a project to work on.
