I've just found about this cool new unit, it converts pure audio signal (guitar signal) into MIDI. So, no need for MIDI pickups, extra drilling etc. Of course, I haven't tried this by myself and I'm mostly guessing but seems like a nice tool, specially for tabbing your own work, check it out.

I'm struck by how well they're marketing it

Directly to tabs... That's pretty great

Wow this gadget looks very interesting!! I really wonder if its accurate ! Too bad there isn't software that does the same thing..

Looks cool man
Bought myself a GK-3 and a Boss GR20 a few months ago, the guy who sold it to me didn't send all the attachment pieces for the GK-3. so can't really test it out - so annoying!!! No idea where to get the replacement bits without getting a whole new midi pick up. Plus can't sell it without it as who would want one without the necissary parts! GRRRRRRRR.
I'll keep my eye on that though

I tried some softwares but nothing works ok, lots of wrong notes. Oh, and by the way, this unit doesn't work in polifony, just mono stuff like solos etc but you can easily add few notes in tab latter or if needed, like double bends, stops...

Looks like an awesome device indeed

Looks really interesting. I just googled a bit and found out that it costs 120€. Pretty much for such a small tool. I also found a cool video:
How does it work? Does that G2M send the audio signal in MIDI format to the computer where a program is converting the sound into saxophone, etc.?

hmm... sounds like a normal software can do, too... only monophony.

heh, have to find it, somewhere in those CDs.... You know, this hardware, if it's not a pickup, is only analyzing the sound, and that's all we knew before with software.... it's just guitar has a too complicated sound image

Absolutely, but it's also hardware combined with software, I say we try it and see for our self.

Ohh, I see Tony has entered the thread, lets hear his opinion on the topic.

As you asked so nicely Muris .
The midi latency on the device is just about ok imho - 16-32ms. My Roland is better then that on the low E but cost quite a bit more. I'd be interested to know how well the unit copes with wolf notes etc and bends. See that it claims it can track bends - really? How well. What about harmonics and damped notes.
Midi direct to tab - there is software around, for instance 'Personal composer' claims to do it. There are few projects in a couple of European universities doing more work on the maths here as well. However AFAIK none of these are 100% yet, particularly on polyphonic material. If the pickup can do the scoring then great even with the latency and monophonic .
Personally I think it would be great if the midi to score software worked - it would be great to see the score appear as you played.
Cheers, Tony

I have Roland GR 20 and need to get GK-3 pickup for it . This looks like a great alternative tough - just wondering about latency and accuracy for tabs. I can certainly see it being very useful for GMC lessons !

Thanks Tony!
Yeah, latency is pretty descent and price is about 100$, add no drilling and it seems very nice indeed. I mostly need it to get some proper MIDI for tabbing, imo none of those softwares or hardwares will be able to convert everything 100%, doze of editing shall be always.

What a neat little toy I've got the Roland GI-20 and GK-3 pickup myself (no need for drilling with that one) that i'm quite pleased with. Wouldnt mind trying out this sonuus box though to check the differences. Judging by that video, it tracks bends better.
Posted by: tonymiro Jan 25 2009, 12:05 AM
Yes Muris for @100US dollars it looks a bargain even if it can't do all that they say. If it can its the bargain of the decade . Also just for the tabbing the latency is almost irrelevant .
Pedja - Not sure if it would work with the GR-20 since - if that's the same as a GI-20 - it hooks up via Roland's special multi-pin cable?
Ajmurrell - I'm pretty sure that a couple of UK guitar shops carry parts for the Roland systems. Try DV247, they're usually pretty good, also Soundslive (?) up in Heald Green near Manchester. If its the multipin cable you may be able to get on off ebay as well. Else contact Roland UK (tel 01792 702701) or http://www.roland.co.uk/.
Cheers, Tony

Wow, I really would like to try one and see if it really works. Tabbing would be so fast with that.

Whenever I put a MIDI file into GP it always gives really weird finger positions. I don't know if I could get a lot of use with this

You were probably watching some earlier model before mate. This is actually very decent pricing.

Yep. that's true. It would be great if GP had a feature such that you could select some bars and fit that to a particular scale box or something like that.
Still, this item seems interesting. If anyone buys make sure to make a review

No actually GK-3 was the one I was asking for price in March 2008 just before I left Boston. Daddy's Junky music would sell it for 100$ and I remember Ebay also had some really good deals on it
Friend of mine gave me a link of some unknown shop in Belgrade that sells it for 11.000 dinars which is less than 180 $
Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jan 26 2009, 12:00 AM
That's pretty strange, I can't find them bellow 170$ on the web, possibly their price went up. I gave you that link cause they ship to Serbia, not cause it is a good bargain. BTW that was bass GK3, sorry here's the one: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GK3/
PS in what store did you find it? Is it new?

For some strange reasons prices did go up for it , however this store in Belgrade still sells it for less I am not sure if its old or new - you can visit them - but it seems pretty legit.
