Hello all, I've been here for a couple weeks now and I'm sure a few of you have seen me around.
Anyways... My name is Josh, I'm 17, and I live in Louisiana. I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now, and I can safely say it's my favorite thing to do. I've tinkered around in a couple bands, but I haven't gotten involved in anything serious. I'm a full time college student, and I have tons of free time (and $$$, but not tons) to dedicate to this. Anyway, I'm a fan of Most types of music with a guitar in it. From Jazz...some Country, Classic Rock, 80's rock, the (new) and old Metal, I like most of it. So heres my feeble attempt at a lesson! I don't have a camera yet...well...one that works. So I will try to borrow one ASAP... ________________________________________________________________________ Riff #1 This piece uses an E Minor shape played like so: E||-------|| B||-------|| G||--4---|| D||--5----|| A||--7----|| E||-------|| This riff mainly uses this chord, but it is not strummed, it is individually picked, sort of like a backwards arpeggio, with a triplet thrown in, (and plenty thrown in elsewhere too). (Note: g=ghost note, s=slide) E||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------| B||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------| G||--2g2s----4-------------|------------------------|-----------------------| D||---------------5---------|--5----5g7----5----4--|-----------------------| A||--------------------7----|------------------------|--5--------------------| E||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------| ______ Riff_1.mp3 ( 255.54K ) Number of downloads: 803 ______ Riff #2 This one is based off of a Gsus2, played at the 3rd like so! E||-------|| B||-------|| G||-------|| D||--7----|| A||--5----|| <---Gsus2 E||--3----|| We will be slightly modifying it, by sliding to the 7th fret on D from the 5th fret. And we will be doing the exact same thing with the next piece of riff #2, which is comprised of Fsus2 on 1st fret. E||-------|| B||-------|| G||-------|| D||--5----|| A||--3----|| <---Fsus2 E||--1----|| And now the Riff... E||----------------------------------------| B||----------------------------------------| G||----------------------------------------| D||---------------5s7---------------3g5p3--- A||----------5------------------3----------| E||----3-------------------1---------------| _____ Riff_2.mp3 ( 193.9K ) Number of downloads: 562 _____ Riff #3 This one's built off the beginning chord, E Minor... but this lick gradually climbs a few notes through 2 Boxes from the D Penatonic Major scale, with one or two legato type notes I threw in. |------------------------|---------------------------| |------------------------|----------------------------| |---------4--------------|---------------------------| |---------------5--------|--5----7--5h7p5----5--4-| |-------------------7----|---------------------------| |------------------------|---------------------------| Q Q Q Q Q Q Q H -------------------------|----------------------------------| -------------------------|--------10----12----10g12~-----| ------------------11s----|--12------------------------------| -------------9-----------|----------------------------------| --5s----7----------------|----------------------------------| -------------------------|----------------------------------| _____ Riff_3.mp3 ( 189.41K ) Number of downloads: 507 _____ Riff #4 Pretty self explanatory, just like the original E minor chord, just played an octave up at the 16'th fret. Now you will noticed I have the last note (A) being Vibrato'd, but I clearly didn't vibrato it in the recording. I have a hard time vibrato'ing anything on the high E string *(my floyd rose is malfunctioning so i Locked it in place, hah). Anyway, The last part of this riff Just climbs up another scale, Pretty typical in rocky type music, I'm a big fan of the string skipping and long stretches. -----------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------15h17--17~~~---| -----------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------| --16-------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------19s21----------------| --------17----------17----17g19----|--17h19p17-----16-------------------18-----------------------| --------------19-------------------|-------------------------------17s19---------------------------| -----------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------------| ______ Riff_4.mp3 ( 183.7K ) Number of downloads: 526 ______ Riff #5 Em chord, again, (i know i know ><) But this time i threw in a little shred peice at the end, because i see this in lots of the instructor's videos, and I love it . So here it is... |-----3-----| Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q -----------------------------------|--------------------------------------| -----------------------------------|--------------------------------------| --16-------------------------------|--------------------------------------| --------17--------17----17g19----|----17----19----17----16----| --------------19-------------------|--------------------------------------| -----------------------------------|--------------------------------------| |-----3-----| - If not, let me know. Note*: Just creating this "lesson" alone helped me out substantially (For the hours it too me to write it). The whole point in my creating this lesson was supposed to be about breaking my terrible habits. I had serious troubles on the fretboard, trying to improvise, yet finding myself playing the same lick, on the same frets, in the same pentatonic scale box. So over the past week, I'd try to learn new riffs, and songs, and while trying to learn solo's, i noticed I kept playing my same stupid riffs when trying to improvise, as if it were all my muscles knew how to do. I actually overcame this little obstacle today just by writing something different, just to get my fingers moving in different patterns (I tend to be extremely redundant in my playing)...so... I hope SOMEONE gets something outta this, I know I did... enjoy. Note #2: I am recording through Headset mic right now, so Forgive the horrible quality. I am going to invest in some adapters so i can go directly to Line In. Oh, and here's the drum loop, that you can Barely hear in my background...It's at 70bpm i believe, which is what all the Riff_x tracks are recorded in. I know this lesson doesn't have all kinds of fancy tricks, but it's sure helped me already. Please let me know If this helped anyone, or was any fun at all to play, This post has been edited by atomix1337: Jul 29 2007, 04:03 PM -------------------- Gear: Ibanez VBT700BK, Ibanez RG270 Custom Painted (JB/Jazz pups), Strat Knockoff, Marshall V8080, Boss GE-7 EQ, Boss MT-2, Boss CH-1 Chorus, Korg AX1G MultiFX.

You pluck it but deaden the string with your left or right hand so you just get a kind of toneless click ...

*nod* Didn't know that You were confused with a grace note I think. BTW andrew @ You're talking about a dead note. A ghost note is a note which is kind off delayed. In tab it looks like this: ----(5)---- you hear them but don't pluck them.
