Hello all, I've been here for a couple weeks now and I'm sure a few of you have seen me around.

Anyways...

My name is Josh, I'm 17, and I live in Louisiana. I've been playing guitar for about 5 years now, and I can safely say it's my favorite thing to do. I've tinkered around in a couple bands, but I haven't gotten involved in anything serious. I'm a full time college student, and I have tons of free time (and $$$, but not tons) to dedicate to this. Anyway, I'm a fan of Most types of music with a guitar in it. From Jazz...some Country, Classic Rock, 80's rock, the (new) and old Metal, I like most of it. So heres my feeble attempt at a lesson!

I don't have a camera yet...well...one that works. So I will try to borrow one ASAP...

________________________________________________________________________

Riff #1

This piece uses an E Minor shape played like so:

E||-------||
B||-------||
G||--4---||
D||--5----||
A||--7----||
E||-------||

This riff mainly uses this chord, but it is not strummed, it is individually picked, sort of like a

backwards arpeggio, with a triplet thrown in, (and plenty thrown in elsewhere too).

(Note: g=ghost note, s=slide)

E||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------|
B||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------|

D||---------------5---------|--5----5g7----5----4--|-----------------------|

E||-------------------------|------------------------|-----------------------|

Riff #2

This one is based off of a Gsus2, played at the 3rd like so!

E||-------||
B||-------||
G||-------||
D||--7----||
A||--5----|| <---Gsus2
E||--3----||

We will be slightly modifying it, by sliding to the 7th fret on D from the 5th fret.

And we will be doing the exact same thing with the next piece of riff #2, which is
comprised of Fsus2 on 1st fret.

E||-------||
B||-------||
G||-------||
D||--5----||
A||--3----|| <---Fsus2
E||--1----||

And now the Riff...

Riff #3

This one's built off the beginning chord, E Minor... but this lick gradually climbs a few notes through 2 Boxes from the D Penatonic Major scale, with one or two legato type notes I threw in.

Riff #4

Pretty self explanatory, just like the original E minor chord, just played an octave up at the 16'th fret. Now you will noticed I have the last note (A) being Vibrato'd, but I clearly didn't vibrato it in the recording. I have a hard time vibrato'ing anything on the high E string *(my floyd rose is malfunctioning so i Locked it in place, hah). Anyway, The last part of this riff Just climbs up another scale, Pretty typical in rocky type music, I'm a big fan of the string skipping and long stretches.

Hmph, The ASCII came out kind of Lopsided when i pasted it here, but i think it's legible enough.
If not, let me know.

Note*: Just creating this "lesson" alone helped me out substantially (For the hours it too me to write it). The whole point in my creating this lesson was supposed to be about breaking my terrible habits. I had serious troubles on the fretboard, trying to improvise, yet finding myself playing the same lick, on the same frets, in the same pentatonic scale box. So over the past week, I'd try to learn new riffs, and songs, and while trying to learn solo's, i noticed I kept playing my same stupid riffs when trying to improvise, as if it were all my muscles knew how to do. I actually overcame this little obstacle today just by writing something different, just to get my fingers moving in different patterns (I tend to be extremely redundant in my playing)...so... I hope SOMEONE gets something outta
this, I know I did... enjoy.

Note #2: I am recording through Headset mic right now, so Forgive the horrible quality. I am going to invest in some adapters so i can go directly to Line In. wink.gif

Oh, and here's the drum loop, that you can Barely hear in my background...It's at 70bpm i believe,
which is what all the Riff_x tracks are recorded in. I know this lesson doesn't have all kinds of fancy tricks, but it's sure helped me already.

Please let me know If this helped anyone, or was any fun at all to play, tongue.gif

Hey that is actually very good and not to badly record under the conditions you specified, My only suggestion is to tab it out in at least power tabs since it is free.
Once you become addicted to tabs from those tab programs it is hard to look at text tabs for any thing very complicated. But again nice licks and great piece.

PS..

guess you r an LSU fan?

atomix, I just skimmed through this lesson, keeping eye of the tabs and listening to your sound bytes. Gotta say, fantastic riffs. I'm going to definitely invest more time in the tablature and theory in this lesson tommorow morning.

Great job! And I hope you get that video recorder smile.gif

Hello Atomix,
That's a good stuff for a first lesson. It is promising. Cheers for your first shot!
Making lessons make your music knowledge stronger. So you built like this self confidence...
Everything looks pretty good.

You could also add a picture of yourself to the lesson.
My general advice for lessons is, demonstrate what you do the best and not the last hotest licks you've just learn. (This advice is not for you in particular...just comes to my mind tho.)
Try to polish manually your tabs. if they comes out messy.
Think also you can export a screen shot from your tab, like this. Looks much better.

First of all, thank you all again for your words of encouragement, you will see more from me in the future.

And to Roo, thanks for your suggestions =), and next time, I will think about what I think my strong points are, and incorporate them into the solo.

Thanks

P.S.: I just noticed that on "Full Tab", midway through it kinda...screws up. I didn't notice that during that transfer, I'll have to fix that. But now i must go to sleep...

Well, from my knowledge, a ghost note is a note that should be slightly heard (used in legato alot, I guess), for example, when you slide from a fret to a higher fret, something like that. Or it could be a note that is intended to be picked very lighty and 'staccato' (very quick). smile.gif

Btw, i got some new adapters and stuff, so now i'll be able to record with direct Line-In, not some stupid headset mic... Time to try it out!

You were confused with a grace note I think.

BTW andrew @ You're talking about a dead note.

A ghost note is a note which is kind off delayed.
In tab it looks like this:

you hear them but don't pluck them.

I always thought ghost notes were as Andrew described. I did a bit of research and here's a quote from the Wikipedia article on Ghost Notes(if I'm not allowed to quote Wiki on this board please just edit!)

As a practical example, consider a guitarist who wishes to ghost one note within a rhythmic figure he is playing. The guitarist would accomplish this by decreasing the pressure the fretting hand is exerting upon the strings when plucking the note to be ghosted (without actually removing the hand from the fretboard, which would cause the free vibration and the sounding of the open pitches of those strings which were plucked). The result would be what is sometimes called a 'scratch', and this would be an example of a ghost note (unless all the unaccented notes in the same figure were 'scratched', in which case the scratches would just be unaccented notes). Therefore, the phenomenon of the ghost note is really a relative one.

For example - when playing Sweet Home Alabama I've always referred to the 2 little unaccented clicks I play in between the first 2 bass C's and G's as ghost notes and this would seem to be correct according to Wiki.
Does anyone else have an opinion/knowledge re these kind of notes?
