i usually hold the pick with my thump and pointer. my "bad middle finger" haha kris usually just stays out of the way and my ring finger and pinky rest on the pickguard not touching the strings

My other fingers (Not the Index, and thumb) I keep on the pickguard, Slightly touching the High E string. Just tried your way. I find that if you move them out of your way when playing the High E. Then theres no problem, but it also depend on what knuckly yoru talking about. If your talking about the middle one then you may want to loosen up some, and not do that. Because I had to Tense up just to get it there, and to stay there. IF your talking about the the one closest to your Nail. Then it shoudl be fine. Just remember to stay relaxed!!
