Hey Guys,

I've owned a Mexican Stratocaster for about a month now, and I love it to pieces.

I've been thinking about swapping out the electronics on my guitar later on down the road, but my knowledge about which type of pickup better suits a strat is lacking.

Does anybody have any input on what they've done to their mexican strats and how these changes affected the guitar overall?

Really appreciate it!

I love my samarium cobalt noiseless, they really are noiseless & I love the sound. The other day I was trying a strat with regular pups and I couldn't believe the hiss & hum.

There are many who like texas specials, check those too if you are into SRV like tones.

What kind of sound do you want to achieve? What is your current sound lacking?

Well let's see here. I'm not really sure how to describe this, but what if I told you the type of music I enjoy playing most? I wish I could say I've played many guitars and I want a so and so sound, but this is my first gem (used to play with a Talent, Squire Strat, etc).

I want my guitar to basically become a bit more ballsy in the bridge pickup! Noiseless would also be beneficial. I'd like to be able to switch from a Led Zeppelin chunky sound to a some Johnny Be Good, Chuck Berry style. I don't want to lose the blues groove at all since in the future I plan on picking up some form of a Les Paul for extra meaty goodness.

Does that help?

Hey Dexter, here's some pointers.

Analyzing timbre is something that you really have to do. What sounds do you like? Not just guitar sounds, but sounds in general. Compare them and try to find out what you like about them.

Try to listen to samples of a Trumpet and then a Cornet. Pretty similar. Which one sounds best, why?

Do this with every sound you can think of, different kinds of pianos, some organs, etc.

This search for tonal qualities in sound will really develop your ear so that you more easily can define your desired guitar sound.

You should of course focus on different guitar sounds, finding out what you like. Because generally EMG's is good for metal, so if you request a metal pickup this could be what you're recommended. But what if you'd like the tonal quality of another pickup in a metal context? You wouldn't know, because you haven't done the proper research.

You need to know what you want to sound like before someone can give you proper advice on how to accomplish that. It's like trying to play a song before you've figured out the key, chord progressions and notes played.

Or sing a song without knowing the lyrics.

Cooking without knowing what to cook, you'll end up turning the oven on when you're supposed to put the food in and everything goes wrong.

Like trying to play from a tablature without ever having heard the song.

Ok, I'll stop the annoying examples now tongue.gif

A lot of people I know swap the middle Pup for a Dimarzio HS3 (Yngwie Sig model) and the Bridge for either a Hotrail or some kind of Stacked Humbucker. This gives the option of Coil Splitting at the bridge.
I have a couple of Strats that are fitted with Hotrails in all positions and now I want to Coil Tap all of them to get a more authentic Strat sound!
IFor a fairly cheap option I can recommend Vintage Toneriders there are several different models available! (Classic, Vintage, Texas etc!!)

THIS THREAD is a list of replacement Pickup Websites!!!
Have fun!!

You will need a humbucker in the bridge position! As Sensible Jones said a single coils sized humbucker (stacked coils or smaller coils next to each other) for a fatter sound in the bridge.

The Seymour Duncan Hotrail or Jeff Beck Jr will cover that sound I guess so now we need some middle and neck pickups. A seymour Duncan SSl-1 middle and neck single coils will match the bridge humbcker outputwise and they will cover your vintage rock sounds...

The thing about being really stupid, is that there are a zillion ways to be a moron. There are usually several ways to be intelligent, given a situation, but it is a small finite number. But there are always a zillion ways to be to blithering idiot. So finding a new way to have the intellect of an artichoke is nothing to be proud of really, it is easy to do.

So true... To bad im still an artichoke haha

I suggest TexMex or Texas Special pickups. They are common in hot rodded MIM Strats and can biff up their tone nicely.

Texas specials will work nicely for blues but not for a Led Zepplin like rythm tone imho
(although I have played the Tspecials only once, so I might be wrong...)

That sounds splendid. When/If I do this soon, I'll record some before/after.

Should I stay away from Lace Sensor (w/ hot bridge) ?

Hey Dex,

The texas specials are a good choice, they are slightly hotter than the original usa pups and work very well in the neck, middle and in between. the hot rails are fitted to the bridges of the hot rod strats so you should be able to find some on YT to have a look at, if you prefer more vintage sounds then the SD antiquity are amazing pups, maybe not for zep tho........
