The principles of our Army are: + Improve your technique + Make music and solos + Have fun + Destroy the enemy (hahaha not realy just kidding... ) "Hi Gabriel, I've given considerable thought to joining an instructor's mentoring program, and because of my time constraints, I am limited to joining only one. As such, if you have room (looks like you have quite a few people under your thread), I would like to join your "army" so to speak. A Little about myself - I have been playing guitar on/off for about 5 years or so. I started when I was 19 and stopped around 21 when I took up sports and got married. 18 years later, I had to give up sports due to work obligations that didn't allow me to pursue my normal 3 day/week practice regimen. I can't not have a hobby - I am driven to pursue things I am interested in to see how well I can become. I picked up the guitar again about 3 years ago and haven't put it down. After playing a year alone doing mundane scales and exercises, I realized they were getting me nowhere because they lacked musical context. I found a studiio near my work that forms bands so I joined and have been playing in a band context for about 2 years now, having done about 10 shows and about 100 open mics. We are currently a trio and I'm the singer as well. Playing and singing are very challenging! But I love performing. I feel very limited in my ability to convey what I want to hear onto my guitar. I'm hoping you can help guide me in pursuing those aspects of my playing that I lack. I don't desire to be a shredder type of player - I want to be able to take a strong solo with fluid feel and add fast runs where appropriate and land on bends that climax the solo. I'm all about taste with a touch of flair. It's the transitions to fast runs then back-out to slow soulful bends I really want to focus on. Learning good short burst runs, quick tasteful licks that exit to tasteful playing. I feel I have a mediocre grasp of taste - I know what sounds good and can emulate the feeling in bends and tone to a certain point (there's always room for growth), but what I lack are the technical skills to jump into fast runs then pull out again. That's what I hope to practice. I found several lessons on GMC I'm looking interested in - not the entire lesson, but small pieces of runs that interest me. I'll write up a schedule describing my current practice routine - I want to re-engineer it to focus on my interests. Currently I spend 100% of my time going over cover songs for my band. I have to memorize all the lyrics cause I'm the singer as well as guitarist (2x as much to learn!). Chris -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!

Thanks for all the info and lesson links that you gave me in the first post. It seems that you just have to create a complete routine that incorporates all those different techniques and practice every day the same amount of time dividing your session in lapses of time for each technique. Most of those lessons are difficult to master but there are some lessons there that can be used as exercises... for example Pavel's AP lessons are great exercises for this technique (the same goes for the Sweep Picking lessons). For bending and vibrato I would go for any Jonathan Burgos lesson you could start with his easier lessons (the tasty etude or any blues lesson could work).

My routine is geared towards band practice and overcoming solos in a live situation.
10:30 p.m. -l 11:00 p.m. I work on hand-sync exercises, mostly pentatonic because I struggle the most with AP'ing those. As of late, I've been learning Killer Pentatonics (Zakk Wylde) and the opening lick of Emir Hot's World Set on Fire - trying to get the patterns memorized and fluid at a slower pace - 110 BPM. I switch between each one, sometimes adding in other licks to get my pullon/hammer ons syncd with my picking. I rotate through each exercise when I find I'm burned out on one just to keep the ball rolling. 11:00 - 1:00 a.m. Practice cover songs - there are several songs in my set that are very difficult to play and sing, so I'll turn on my mp3 player and play rhtytm & sing into a microphone standing up with mirror in front of me so I can see myself in the mirror and try to simulate a live playing setting. I'm attempting to separate my singing pattern from my playing pattern For instance, this past month I've been trying to conquer singing and playing this concurrently (skip to 2:50 of A Girl Like You by the Smithereens). Note the rhytm pattern backing the singing is the same as the opening rhythm pattern of the song). 1:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m. Practice AP,sweeping patterns and moving various licks through different string patterns. So as you can see, I follow a very loose practice regimen - It's mostly geared towards prepping for live performance of songs that are fairly basic and concentrate on rhythm. I put into my schedule more precise type practices (sweeping/AP'ing/Licks) to make sure I keep myself on the learning curve for soloing, but the songs I play don't really require it. My goal is to start introducing songs that require more technical abilities in terms of solos. Anyhoo - pretty basic. I'll start working on Burgos' stuff. I would like to work on 3 lessons concurrently since I can only make headway on a single lesson a little at time because it takes time get the motor muscles acclimated to a new pattern. I'll decide on one of his lessons and start learning one of them tonight - I'll post as soon as I make a decision - too many great lessons - hard to pick one right off the bat! Thanks! Great choice Sir! Jonathan's lessons are very inspiring... if you want to choose another two lessons to work one, I would go for something more technical and maybe something that uses some fusion phrases to expand your guitar vocabulary... what do you think??
For the first option, you could go for any Muris lesson at your level, somethings that combines AP, Sweep and legato.. and for the second I think that Stephane is the man. He has some really cool fusion/jazz lessons there to incorporate uncommon phrases and scales. What do you think? Regarding your routine, I think that it's ok to center your practice on your live performances... but also not forget of technique exercise to keep on improving your playing. I have nothing to argue about it. It sounds perfect for me.

Learn the arpeggios, the triads, play the triads horizontally on each string. I don't suppose you have any backing tracks available do you? Small update - I'm almost done learning the heavy ballad in C# . I have most of the phrasing down - oddly, the hardest part of this song for me is the descending pentatonic lick - it's just a bit fast for me - pentatonics that span 3 strings have always been my nemesis as I haven't spent much time practicing them until this lesson I should have a video to show you by Friday, though an Iphone video will have to suffice as I'm still down a computer that can handle Reaper... I started a bit of Muris' lesson too, but likely won't have anything to show this week on that. Chris! -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!
