Hi Arctic1234

Please write a short info about your current playing abilities, prefered styles and post some recordings or a video.
I am looking forward to this and I hope that you will learn many useful things throughout this program.

All the best

Hi Emir!

I'm really looking forward to start with the MTP with you! smile.gif

A little bit about me:

My name is Vemund, and I live in Norway, not far away from Oslo. I am 16 years old and have been playing guitar for almost three years, but only about half of it with the electric guitar. I am also taking piano and singing classes (started some months ago), so I know something about this too smile.gif
I would say that my guitar playing is on lvl 6 steady, but I manage to do some 7 lessons, and I am working on learning more of them smile.gif

Music style:
I basically like everything which has to do with the "old-time rock" with bands like AC DC, Deep purple, Whitesnake etc. I also like blues and some metal (but not the heaviest wink.gif )
And when it comes to guitarists, i like people like Satch, Vai, Petrucci, Bryan May and so on.

Currently practicing:
Technique:
* Sweeping (need this to do some more lvl. 7 lessons ... and to eventually move forward)
* I'm practicing a lot of picking, I need to get a little bit more steady, but it will do with some time.
* Some improvisation, but only when I play "just for fun".
Lessons:
* Csardas - By Zsolt
* Speep picking lesson - By Muris (pretty basic I guess, but still hard for me...)
* Climax in a solo - By... well... you! cool.gif

Good sides, and problems about my playing:
Good:
* I have fairly good picking
* Most of my playing is mostly good (to my lvl of playing)
* I know about half of Andrew's theory lessons...
Problems:
* ...I Have not learnt the other half (duh laugh.gif)
* I need more practicing at sweeping and picking
* I'm not sure about how good my vibrato is
* ... the same thing about my rhythm
* I need more work at scales

Things I would like to work with:
Well, the things I would like to focus on is better rhythm in my playing, together with the vibrato (I'm really not sure about where I am in this). I would like to learn some sweeping, and want to focus more on picking... to reach up to higher levels within my playing. Also I need to learn more theory, and focus more on scale - practice. And after this I could need some practicing in rhythm guitar and song-producing/mixing.

When it comes to the REC - program within the MTP I am totally open for suggestions... but as I mentioned, I got no chance at lessons higher than 7... yet. cool.gif

Me playing:
 Deep_impro.wmv ( 3.87MB ) : 135

I made this tape earlier today, when I found out I got you as my mentor. It's just a short improvisation over a backingtrack for "soldier of fortune" (by Deep Purple). I know there are some mistakes, at least one bend (in the middle of the video) is way out of tune. Also I noticed there was not much of variety in my playing, and some wrong notes occasionally... But well, I have a problem with my cable, so I did not dare do anything more at the moment.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the first assignment, I'm and very happy to be in the program with you!

Cheers! smile.gif

Hi and thank you for all this info. Your video has some very nice melodic ideas. We will work on vibrato and make it nice and consistent. About sweep picking I can give you some exercises so you can practice. That's not that difficult but you need to practice it every day. There will be assignment every week and you also have to submit a REC take once a month. Let's take my neoclassical solo for beginners. That's a good one for vibrato. I'll record a video of me playing and explain the concept. When you're ready you can submit it for the REC program.

I'll be back soon with the assignment smile.gif

Great!

I am already practicing sweeping at least 1 hour a day, though I just started practicing some days ago... but when I first really want to learn somethhing, I'm that type that never lets it go until I know it cool.gif.

Anyway, your lesson sounds great for REC take, and since it's in the end of the month there will be no problem submitting it for REC. And I will certanly have the time for assignments too rolleyes.gif

Looking forward to getting started! smile.gif

Ok Arctic here we go. Some other guys are also doing this same thing so I am just copying the text from them. It's good that more of you are going for the same thing so you can check other guys threads and see their progress as well.

Your first assignment is on Sunday - 6th December. Play only the 1st part in 130bpm. The week after we will play the same thing in 155 and the second video in 130.

Check http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=32281&hl= for backing tracks and GP files.

Great! smile.gif

I have already started n the lesson, and I'm already getting it up to the right speed ( I think mellow.gif )

Just one little problem:
You see, when I try to play to the backingtrack everything seems fine, but it seems as if the backing is two beats short (or one, I'm not quite sure) anyway... I can't seem to get with the" last sweep box" when I play with the backing... huh.gif

You know... this part:

- - - - -12 - 16- - - -12 -16 - - - 12--16 - - - 12--16 - - - 12- 16- - - -- -
- - 12- - - - - - -12- - - - - -12 - - - - - -12 - - - - - -12 - - - - - - - - - -

Is there anything wrong with the backing, or just with my playing???

Either way let me know rolleyes.gif

Cheers!

Hi Emir! smile.gif

I have just started to look on the second video of the sweeping exercises and I found a little problem for me: unsure.gif

You see, when I pick down stroke palm muting is doable, but what when I pick upwards?... Then I just get these ringing noises... blink.gif

Any suggestions? smile.gif

You can mute those as well. Maybe the first 2 notes (pull off) you don't mute much but mute everything else. Check your sound. That doesn't need too much distortion. Also the pickup position should be up - neck.

Ok, I see, but then I would have to mute with my left hand... right? I find it extremely hard to mute with right hand when I do the upstrokes.

Why? Just put your palm on the bridge and play. As simple as that smile.gif

How is it going? Can we have the fixed take soon so we don't lose the whole week for the next assignment which should be the next Sunday?

Posted by: arctic1234 Dec 9 2009, 06:33 AM

Hi Emir!

Sorry for late responding, have been a little busy (science test and a presentation... still going on)... wink.gif

About the take, I actually agree with what you are saying, and I'm going to record a take as soon as possible... The only problem with this is the time, I don't think I could upload it today, either tomorrow or on Friday.. from Friday to Sunday I have no homework what so ever, so then I will have the time and everything... Also I believe I now know most of how I will do my take, it's only the time which is the matter...

Anyway... cheers! rolleyes.gif

Ok man I am waiting smile.gif Thanks for the update

Hi Emir! smile.gif

Some good news, and some problems here:

Good news is that I'm done with all kinds of stupid tests at school... Also, outside there is minus 14 degrees (Celsius), so unfortunately (just kidding laugh.gif ) I'm stuck in the house with my guitar for a while ... this = much more time on the guitar (I'm in some sort of a math trance, Hehe)! biggrin.gif

Anyway, problems are that Movie Maker has completely shut down at my computer (I can open the program, but nothing else), I also have some struggling getting the two string sweeps up to speed... And also, I don't quite think I understand how you do the sweeps without moving or muting (or whatever you do) with your left hand while playing, I just keep getting those ringing noises!

Example:
 wrong_.wav ( 1.38MB ) : 125

It's just slowly the first position one time, to show you what I mean.. Still some days to go though...

Anyway... Cheers! smile.gif

Posted by: Emir Hot Dec 19 2009, 05:53 AM

If you play this slow then of course you will hear this ringing noise smile.gif Mute more (press your palm harder) and try to play faster. I don't really know a better way to explain this than on the video I did. Try your best smile.gif

Hi Emir

Sorry I'm one day late, but I keep having a tremendous struggle with this sweeping technique! Also, still movie-maker doesn't work, but I'm probably going to get Sony Vegas right after Christmas, so problem will soon be solved smile.gif

Anyway, I still have problems with ringing noises on three string sweeps, and I would not say that my two string on 155 is very good, and it's many holes in the playing sad.gif
It's a hell of a battle!

Anyway... :
 2stringsweep155_take1.wav ( 5.85MB ) : 154

You are late behind the backing smile.gif You need to hit the first note on the first beat always. I know this requires practicing but what can we do... just practice. Also make it in triplets. Your sweeps are too fast. All notes need to last the same (same duration). I hope you know all this just need more time.

Please upload the video on the assignment thread when you get Sony Vegas. Also don't forget the REC take of any GMC lesson by the end of the month, that's another GMC requirement in order to move on. When you upload on the REC thread please leave the link on the assignment thread as well.

Cheers smile.gif

I know most of what you say, but yes, it's just a matter of practicing! The REC will be no problem, since it's no sweeps in it. smile.gif

Hi

Sorry for being late. There was a lot to do. Now I am back and happy to continue our old MTP phase. If you want to continue where we stopped then I am happy to do so. Just let me know either way.

Cheers

Hi Emir!

Good to hear from you again smile.gif !

I understand you must have been busy, me too (I haven't really had any time for guitar lately sad.gif) ... I would actually love to get back on track with the MTP! The only problem is right after Easter we come in the period with exams, something I translated to "mock exams" (don't know for sure it's the word), and something is called "year test" translated (But basically it's just the mock exams once more... wink.gif )... Anyway, is it possible to do the MTP in a way I will have the time for both?? If so, I would love to get back on track! smile.gif

Cheers!
