GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ New To The Forums, Need Some Advice

Posted by: Patrick D Feb 19 2008, 07:02 PM

Hello all!

My name is Patrick from St. Louis, MO in the US of A!

I have been "playing" guitar (and i use the term loosely) for about 5 years now. I signed up for GMC hoping to improve drastically in all aspects of my guitar playing, but looking through the lessons, I have no idea where to start and absolutely no idea what lessons i need to improve.

My influences include Kirk Hammett, John Petrucci (my fav!), and Eric Johnson, among many others, and while I know I can't just dive into their songs and learn them, I would like to someday.

Can anyone help a wayward guitar player find his way in this crazy, mixed up world?

Thanks guys and i'm looking forward to improving!

Welcome Patrick,
You have few options. There is a nifty lessonn planner on the main page. You can just plug in the style of music you would like to practice and your expierence level, and it will roll out a number of different recommendations for you. Or you can start with Kris' 101 lessons there is a ton of good stuff in there. Also, I'd reccomend spending some time just poking around the site a bit, and seeing what all is out there, when you see something you like, you can bookmark it and comeback to it later.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure your having fun. And feel free to ask for help whenever you need. I've found these forums to be very helpful, and I think you will too.

Welcome!

John Petrucci- an excellent player indeed wink.gif

Well first you should check out the beginner lessons- and see if you can play them

http://www2.guitarmasterclass.net/beginner-guitar/beginner-video-lessons1.htm

if the seem a little easy then you can check out other easier lessons (theres a link on that page ^ )

I think that someone aspiring to be the next john petrucci should be working lie crazy on their alternate picking- so search for alternate picking in the search bar (try an advanced search then limit the difficulty to something you feel you'll be confortable with)

Also on the main page did you see the "start here" box? enter your level and style (try for shred, as that looks like something you interested in) and a lesson plan will be made for you, check out the lessons and if they're not your cup of tea you can swap them for others.

Remember some lessons you wont be able to play right away- but work hard at them and you'll be surprised at your development!

Take care hope that helped point you in some sort of direction smile.gif

Lesson planner is a good way to go..I suggest just browsing lessons and finding something that looks cool and doable to you and going for it..Also check out this topic - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=11603&st=0&start=0 Its about what was the first lesson members practiced on gmc..Some good suggestions there.. wink.gif

Welcome to the forum man. You can use the lesson planner or search option. Try some of your favorite guitarist in the search to find in the style lesson. If you don't find it, go to similar music

Try this http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/john-petrucci-style-melodic-solo2/. It should be easy enough if you have been playing for 5 years. Even if you just have a little bit of a clue you should have some fun with it.
Welcome and don't forget to breath!
