What exactly is a double locking tremelo? I see this with the Floyd Rose all the time but I have no clue what it actually means.
cheers
It basically means the strings are bolted down at both end - at the nut and at the bridge. Early Floyd Rose trems had a single lock on the bridge so when the bar was dipped or raised the strings would slip around the nut and constantly go out of tune - the double locking ensures the strings stay in place and more importantly - stay in tune!
Hope that helps
EDIT: D'uh - I meant the other way round.. single locking was at the nut only (I should know - I've got one). In any case there was still slippage of strings and detuning occuring hence the double lock enhancement
