Wellcome to the....

Here's a preview of the backing track:




Collab is inspired by Nightwish songs as requested in one of collaboration topic. There was also a request for the collab to be epic....well...I hope the backing track is epic enough to influence You to play some really epic solos

Let's simply point out all the stuff so everyone can clearly understand what's happening :

1. This is a video collaboration but if you don't have the ability to record a video, you can still access the collaboration. Simply send me some cool pics of you and your guitar that I could later use in the final video

2. Deadline is extended to 15th April (from 1st of April that was the first deadline)). That's the final day you can deliver complete pack of your files:
- video of you playing your take
- audio of your solo mixed with the backing track (name it "yournickname_guitar_mix")
- audio of your guitar without the backing track (name it "yournickname_guitar_only")


3. How to prepare audio files.
Preparing your audio files the way I recommend (compatible with session for further all takes mixdown) will help me to get you solos in
perfect sync with the backing track and will shorten the time I'll need to make the final mix. Follow steps below:

- open your DAW (Reaper, Cubase, Audacity, Ableton or whatever you use)
- create new project
- set project tempo to 127 bpm (that's the backing track tempo)
- import the backing track to a stereo track (do not edit it's lenght)
- move it to point 0 (zero) on the timeline (absolute beginning of the timeline/bars line
- now when you turn on your DAW's metronome, you should have exactly 2 bars (8 clicks) before the backing count in starts (hi-hat).
At this point the backing track should be in perfect sync with your project/session and it's left and righ edges shoul be perfectly matched
with the bar lines of 127 bpm tempo
- add another track to record your guitar solo. Here's a lot of options so I leave it to you (record through a miced amp, plug-in simulations
or whatever you normally use for this purpose)
- once your solo is ready, select the exact range of backing track image (mixdown range). Use "snap" option to make sure it will force the
start/end markers to match the bar lines
- now export audio mixdown of both - solo and backing track. Call it "yournickname_guitar_mix". Please export the file as 44.1kHz 16 bit
wave or mp3 file. It has critical meaning for me, when importing to final mix session. Your mixdown should be exactly the same length
as the backing track I delivered
- press SOLO button on your guitar solo track and repeat mixdown process. This time call it "yournickname_guitar_only". Keep same
mixdown settings as above.

For video files please at least set the audio to 44.1kHz. I prefer MainConcept AVC or Sony AVC files but there is no must on this.

Don't worry if you are not able to prepare files the way I described. You can still participate and I'll simply spend some more time
trying to match your files to the final mixdown.

- key: D-minor or D-dorian (go to "scales" point for more feedback)

5. Post your take for preview. You can count on instructors feedback and you can make as many versions/tweaks as the time till
deadline will allow you to. You don't need to send all files everytime you want to post a take for preview. Do it once you're sure it's a final
take of yours

6. Final mix limitations. Of course it is not possible to include all solos at their full length and keep reasonable final mix length at the
same time. That's why we (instructors) cut parts or make duels to create best impression for all listeners. at the same time we allow to use
full length backing track to post your full take on your youtube channel or other social media platforms. Both - members and guest of the
forum will have access to this thread, so they can listen to their favorite take at the full length.


7. Scales and chord progression. As I found in a few Nightwish songs, same in the collab we have a key of D-minor.
There is one tricky thing though. Guitars play powerchords with no 3rds and I've purposely avoided one chord's 3rd setp to leave a
backdoor for using additional scale - D dorian

Chord progression is: 4/4 Dm | F | C | G5 |

At G5 bar we can consider both - G-minor from a regular D aeolian minor scale or...G-major from a D-dorian scale. Even it the name of
dorian scale may sounds scary for some beginners, in fact those are exactly the same notes as C-major or relative A-aeolian minor scale.
So playing over "white keys only" (notes with no # or b marks) will do the job. You can also try to match some A minor pentatonic licks
over this backign track.

As an opposite, if you want to keep playing over D aeolian minor, you need to replace every B on the fretboar with Bb note. That's all the
differs.

You can try but as it goes for any additional track other than solo, I can't promise anything. It depends on how they will fit or not in the final mix

No problem guys. Longer backing track link added in the main post, "Backing Track" section. You can now search for you inspiration But please focus over 1 minute length for your final solo. This way we can focus on doing as much tweaking as possible before the deadline and make shorter but more impressive solos ))

Really nice man! It's already acceptable for the collaboration but if you have some more time, you can put yourself in listeners shoes and try to spot where you could add some more or tweak things like timming You could for example rethink if the note C# from harmonic minor scale does fit well to the main concept of your solo. It's at 0:16

I don't hear the C#. There is one at around :08 and and F# later in a passing chromatic down from GtoF. I think at :16 I slide up from Bb to C, but perhaps my articulation slurs the note some. Or my wrist puts pressure on the Trem pushing it sharp. I didn't consistently get the chromatic lines in so I'll probably try to get them more consistent and then do one with and one without to hear how it sounds. And, I like the early sliding sound with less pick attack in the other section instead of later where I hit the string more often. I'll probably try a more fluid less pick slide throughout that section or see if the pick attacks on other beats sounds better.

Heck. I've some time to fiddle with it. Maybe then try something else in a completely different vein.

Yeah that's a string bend slur or more likely I put pressure on my floating trem. Not intentional. I don't think I'm fretting a C# at the 14th fret. Just sloppy.

Very nice take bleez! I really dig the idea with those nice fingerpicking runs in the verse. Also the harmony at the end boosts the tension even more. Really nice. Even though you love to stick to minor pentatonic, you have highly improved your dynamics range comparing to the very first collabs we did 2 or 3 years ago

Nothing more wrong Phil There is nothing advanced in this collab Backing track is simple - 4/4 and no key chnages Simply think of it as D-minor improvisation Maybe you can come up with a cool melodic idea like bleez did

Yeah, I often have that displaying on screen and my eyes are dashing from fretboard to screen every half second

Well well...So you say it's your very first take? Very good one! Will spot some more details to tweak but overall concept is descent. The idea to play unison with strings is also a cool invitation to record another guitar,playing harmonies in 3rd's. Also I like your "northern" phrasing on the verse

There is still plenty of time. You know how it's like. Sometimes you can't handle to compose things through a weeks and then simply comes a day you feel inspired by...something that just had been heard or...any other "force of nature" and things will come out just like that.

I think you are trying to play too much at the beginning. Try to focus on a melody you would like to hear in vocals for example. You can then try to boost the tension by playing more or faster or harder...however it all has to have it's point. Your test solo seems to be like a reversed verision of what I've just wrote

Been working on changes to my collab piece. Figure I'd submit it for comments for improvements. Still needs some polishing in places before I record it with video later.

I also found, or stumbled upon more likely, that I seemed to play and record better by lowering the guitar volume and letting the backing drive me. Perhaps I am listening to what I am playing too much instead of listening to how the backing is moving and it affects my timing. Too much attention on the sound of my lines while I'm playing perhaps.

You've removed the notes that were creating confusion - that's great. about the backing track it's exactly the same i feel while recording. I prefer my guitar to be digged into the backing and yes - it does affect the timming in a good way Well done. I would only suggest to make sure about the intonation. At some parts is goes slightly offt he pitch. Maybe too much finger pressure, scale adjustment or tuning method to be fixed.

Yeah I didn't retune before laying it down. I thought about it but I didn't. Although in certain sections, like the slide up I am pushing it a wee bit sharp on purpose. Maybe to much or combined with tuning drift after a few days of playing.

Sure! I usually don't bother about having perfect pitch while I records just a sketch of the solo but then I really give some time to recheck the tuning (on higher frets too) we all know that guitars do not have perfect intonation se we need to compromise.

Thanks Todd Yes, it's the retro RG 535. I just love anything Wizard I neck. So fun to play. I had a "dirty" neck RG 550 years ago. The Rg XXV is Indonesian made but they knocked it out of the park and the Dimarzzio pickups are wonderful. Don't hesitate to grab one man, they are amazing.. way better than the original RG 550 that I had.

Not too crowded for sure I think we could find many people who would love to have only as much "mistakes" as you have in your take, considering level of things being played there Of course it would be great if you could make it even better but if somehow you'll not be able to manage some time, the take you'vce provided is already a good take!

We'll Gene...you improve your playign with each take. I cna notice clear progress in timming and intonation. To be honest I've got friendly with your theme concept so much that I would probably feel disappointed if you would remove it Great job!

Thanks Darius. It has been good practice to continue to work on the collab. I can hear a big difference in the first take from the last. I'll probably try/work on some alternate stuff within it to continue to practice and learn. And perhaps more outside the theme/motif I landed on or maybe some smaller sections with different ideas. I seem to play/practice more and learn more outside the guitar stuff (ableton, arranging etc) when working on a Collab or Gab's Creativity thread.

And I want to work on tabbing what I do and video stuff in addition.

Sure! There are many things/skills around the playign itself, that are usefull and we need to spend some time to learn them too Making arrangments also developes our skills...especially ability to decide what in our playing works for the mix or what doesn't





It doesn't count until you don't share it with us Now we can accept it as your new guitar \m/



A lot of cool things going on there and most important...clearly visible, norther mood I've mentioned before I would only have one request for the final mix - please send me your guitar only track without delay. Of course I will add you similar delay but I might need to do some eq-ingo only on delay track to keep the sapace but don't let the delay blurry the solo You know what I mean? At this moment it's just a little "mess making" with the backing. There is a way you could still have that delay ambient but it would not dominate over the track that much





Great then! As I said - this take is already cool enough so if you would have to choose due to a time limit...please add the video

I"ve always wanted a 550 And an RG 565, Still looking for one of each. Been looking for years. Everytime I find one in good shape it's just crazy pricey it seems for a 20 year old guitar. I still want a red version of that retro rg you have! Been looking for that one as well The used prices seem so close to the new that I'm gonna have to wait. Patience is the key

I"m with you on the Wizard necks. They will spoil you quick! I can appreciate other neck styles but I always come back to the wizard The LTD lynch guitar has a thicker neck than I'm used to but it's less wide also so it's a different beast. But the guitar is still wads of fun to play

The retro rg565 red one looks great. If I had deep pockets I'd probably have on of each I haven't seen as many listed lately. They do seem to be priced a bit steep sometimes. Every once in a while there is a bidding war for one and goes for a fair price.

The Lynch model looks like a fun guitar. From the LTDs I've tried have a thicker neck than most Ibbys but still play pretty slick. Didn't even know about the push/pull knob you mentioned in the other post. Look forward to hearing it in action.

Hey Chris! I think the the very first part (around 1/3) of the video would be very very cool for the collab. I like your mean, goold old rock vibe. I would keep the idea but I would try to focus on the mentioned part and practise it to get best precision for the final take. Bends nee soem attention the get perfect pitch and some of your faster runs tend to loose the notes. I'm sure you are able to fix this and that's what I would took for a purpose of upcoming days

I really liek the dialogue between those two different guitars I fact I was thinking of adding you the delay back in the mix ( I only wanted you to remove it from your files so I could match all parameters to best fit with the track) but when I listen to it now I feel like it sounds very descent even without the delay I will leave it up to you (just tell me if you wan it or not) but of course please at the final stage send ma a file with no fx

Phill - no way man! Collabs purpose is to collect students at different levels and have fun doing something together! The worst thing you can do to your playing is to quit sucha an opportunitries! Take te challenge., You don't have to beat anyone - it's not a competition

Really? This Parker is my favourite guitar that I bought years ago and play most of the time. But you're right: I do have an SG (which I won about 2 years ago) that I used to play in some older collabs. But it has no whammy bar - so for this collab I went with the Parker...

You know how it works....somehow guitar sticks to player and we are all being rocognized by the guitars we have...sometimes I do get the whammy thing. Good Tremolo is priceless

We had so many great takes that it was not a problem to keep it that long...yet imagine the collab would have around 20 minutes if we would keep all the takes untouched




Bleez....You both shoul;d definitely have a band at some points your thinking of solo was so simialr that I had to go back to the audio project to make sure I will not mess the order in the video
