GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Why Does Everybody Hate Nicklback?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 22 2017, 10:58 PM

They have great songs, great singer, great riffs, amazing sound....

most of their albums are similar, but that happens with lots of bands like Motorhead, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Ramones and so..

Why do you think they are so hated?

I don't consider myself a fan, but I don't understand why so much people hates them.

Cool topic.

I don't know much about them. But my impression is that they do everything by the book but seem to have no genuine love for, or connection with, their audience.

At some point it became fashionable to hate Nickelback. My theory is it started with some people poking fun at their lyrics, which admittedly are often juvenile. When you combine that with the chart success they've achieved, that makes you an easy target for contempt. It then snowballed until the antagonism took on a life of its own. Once a cultural meme reaches that level, it just is. There is no rational basis for it.

If you can get past their lyrics, a lot of their music is great, with excellent production. This is one the most awesome riffs of all time:

Generally I was wondering same as you Gab. I did not dig into details, audience relation etc. Judging just by the general tone and composition eerything seemed fine for me. Many other bands where also doing "predictable" music - like P.O.D, Creed, Puddle of Mudd, Disturbed at some point as well. None of them got that much hate. For me much more silly were metalcore bands with growling vocals for a change with "baby ballad singing" smile.gif They also didn't get as much hate as Nickelback smile.gif

BTW...latest clip was really solid

Gab, I was going to post this very question myself but you beat me to it. I think it's just good solid fun time RnR.

because every generation has to show how " cool " theirs is , so they hate what they did not grow up with . Of course the next generation looks at what the previous generation trashed and thinks it wasn't so bad . It happened to eighties metal . to the rock group creed as well . I am just hoping most of the 90's music stays gone forever

I read this quote about them and thought it sums it up pretty well, aside from the fact that hating Nickelback is a meme at this point. “Nickelback is too much of everything to be enough of something. They follow genre expectations too well, which is seen as empty imitation. But also not well enough, which is read as commercial tactics and as a lack of a stable and sincere identity.”

This is definitely something related to their connection with audience. It can also be relate to bad moves or speeches in the past that started the hate.

Because it's true that there are lots of bands like them, that have been very popular as well and I haven't seen as much hate.

A good example is Creed because they got a similar success.

Maybe because they have been the most popular and kept that status along the years?

In Argentina, the most popular bands are those that also have more haters... it works like this: the more haters you have, the better the things are going... ohmy.gif there are a few cases of artists that are respected by everybody.

I have no idea why the NB hate - ? I don't really know anything about NB. I couldn't tell you one NB song. I just know that everybody hates them. Which is classic modern media.

I don't know - maybe?
It sounds like 100 other songs and the video looks like a 100 other videos.
I think I'm beginning to figure why they get dissed so much.

Great music but did anyone else felt the vocal simply doesn't fit perfect? its not bad in any way, just makes me feel the vocalist is singing something he doesn't listen on his free time if this makes sense smile.gif

haha I think that it's not an easy job to write, produce, sing, record and mix a song like that one. Also, it's 16 years old, and I can see how this influenced lots of followers.

Do you refer to lyrics? vocal performance or music style related to vocals?

Posted by: bleez Jun 26 2017, 11:33 PM

wait..... you've not got a gig with these guys coming up do you Gab huh.gif
its okay, we'll still respect you if you do biggrin.gif

I actually think this was by far their best song -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSf_cs4-E-I

Ive always liked that song. It even has the best NB lyric in it - "We've got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out" . that is just a great lyric right there.

*which I assume someone cool wrote for them tongue.gif

Listened 1-2 more times I guess my problem is with the production.

The vocal is dynamically very static in the mix and the vocalist himself isn't making such effort either.

There's point in what you say smile.gif Generally I don't see Nickelback standing out that much from tons of other bands from that specific, let's call it "hard-rock / numetal" kind of box. They succeeded so...maybe there's a reason to make a hate caused by jeluusity. Or....simply much of this hate comes from people not listening to that genre at all. For example Djent or typical Metal fans smile.gif Just trying to point additional view on the case. It's like if I would go to dance music videos and give some hate just because I don't like it at all.

Posted by: jstcrsn Jun 27 2017, 01:16 PM

not to mention the " jealousy factor " , so many people hate seeing other people succeed , they think they are better singers, songwriters , guitarists , or just want that kind of money.

Yeah, I agree with everything you've said here. Jealousy and fundamentalism are usually the starting reasons. I don't see any other reason why people would hate a band that sound good. Then, it becomes a fashion, it's cool to hate them. laugh.gif
