This is a bit disgusting to watch if you are a car guy, I don't even know why but it made me sorta ill to watch this electric car beat all these cars (including Ferrari, Porsche, etc), and every name brand Super Car out in 2017. Most of these "Super Cars/Hyper Cars" are cars that cost more than a very nice home in many cases (hundreds of thousands of dollars/pounds), and are from all over the world representing the worlds best. All of them, SMOKED by a little electric car company from California. Wow. To make it worse, the TESLA (the winner) is the heaviest car in the bunch, and by no means the most expensive. If you want to drive the fastest AMERICAN PRODUCTION car out there, it's time to go electric, or go DEMON. This thing dig a standing quarter in 10.5 seconds! The ONLY production car that can outrun this thing is the DODGE DEMON which beats it by by just under 1 second in the quarter @ 9.65 seconds. The Demon is a thirsty gal, and not cheap on insurance either. Also not nearly as flat out nice or high tech inside as the TESLA. But it's the only thing that can beat it that's made here, in the "Land of Hot Rods".

While a 10.5 second quarter mile is impressive there are at least 8 production cars that are faster including the Demon. So the Demon is definitely not the only production car faster than the Tesla in the quarter mile. And the top speed of the Tesla is only about 155 mph and a McLaren P1 tops out over 215mph just to put things in perspective. That model Tesla is not cheap either and will set you back at least $93k and up to $193.9k where the Demon starts at about $85k.
The Pagani Huayra BC boasts a 9.5 second quarter mile at 150mph but there are only 25 of them produced.
That video was obviously meant to showcase the Tesla and not the fastest production cars in the quarter mile since the real top dogs weren't even represented in the contest.

Yeah but, you just don't get that intoxicating howl of the engine; the joy of blipping the throttle as you change down braking for a bend (heel and toe) (or letting the software do it if you have flappy paddles); no joy of the early morning cold starting deep growl. I guess one day it will be what we have to have, but there's nothing like hearing those horses galloping under the bonnet (hood). wink.gif

I meant to say "American Production Car" which puts the Tesla and the Demon on a really short list. It's two cars. The Tesla and The Demon. The VENOM is not American. It's a LOTUS that's been modified. Sorry to leave "American" out of that sentence. I'll go back and fix it.

I really didn't think an electric car would be the fastest American Production car other than the freaking Dodge Demon which was BANNED by the NHRA as soon as it came out. You can't even take it to a track event.

Exactly smile.gif That's what was kinda sad to me. I'd rather drive nearly any of those other cars. They are just cool, fast, cars. The Engine Symphony is a big part of having a car like that IMHO. Sadly, all the other cars are endangered species. The new hybrid porsche puts up scary fast numbers using both engine and battery. But at least it makes engine noise smile.gif

Banned? No, it is not banned, but you can get kicked of a strip for running it at it's full potential. You can sandbag and race it as is and still beat a Tesla as long as you don't come in under 10 seconds or over 135mph. Otherwise you need some addition safety equipment to run it flat out at the drag strip. And with some tires and some tuning it is capable of running faster than 9.65 in the quarter mile.

Banned? YES smile.gif In it's "Stock trim" the car is in fact, according to the NHRA, BANNED from running according to the rules of the NHRA. I'll let them explain.

"a vehicle running 9.99-seconds or quicker would need to have certain NHRA-accepted equipment, including, but not limited to, a certified roll cage, window net, aftermarket driver restraint system, a driveshaft loop, and a master cut-off switch. It is also necessary for a driver to hold an NHRA Competition License and wear accepted clothing, including a helmet and SFI-certified jacket, pants, gloves, and a neck collar or HANS device."

So in it's stock form, it's not allowed on the track at NHRA sanctioned events. It's "BANNED". However, you can run it, if you install all the safety gear and then get licensed to run it from the NHRA. In that case, you can run it just fine. But stock trim, no NHRA license? Banned.

You can't show up and sand bag. The stats of the vehicle are well known. Which is why they won't let it on the track unless it's got the proper safety gear, and you have the proper license. So yeah, like I said. BANNED. However, if one wants to spend the money to add all the safety gear, and then get NHRA licensed, then yeah, they can run whatever they want. At that point, the car will be heavier and slower so you'd need to tweak it a bit to get it back to factory speed. sad.gif

An individual car is not banned simply on what it is capable of running. The Demon can be, and has been run at NHRA sanctioned events in it's original factory form but the moment an individual car breaks in at under 10 seconds or over 135mph it won't be allowed on the track again until the safety standards for a sub 10 second car are met. In short, the restriction (not a ban) takes effect when the car, or any car for that matter has registered a sub 10 second quarter mile and not before. It is at this time and not before that the safety standards must be met in order for that individual car to be allowed in an NHRA sanctioned event again.

“We currently have guidelines in place that allow new (2008 and newer) performance models to run as quick as 10.00-seconds provided they are stock vehicles as delivered from the factory,” Gray explained. “However, once a competitor runs 9.99-seconds or quicker, there are a number of changes that would need to be made to a stock vehicle in order for it to be accepted for competition.”

NHRA Vice President-Technical Operations Glen Gray

This isn't even a ban. It is the rules as they apply in the name of safety to any car that runs a sub 10 second quarter mile and not just the Demon.
