Hi Muris. Before I ask a stupid question, I'd like to take a sec and thank you for the excellent lessons! Yours and Gabriel Leopardis are by and far my favorite lessons on GMC! Now, onto my dumb question regarding economy picking:

I just looked over your vid lesson for EP, and I have to ask in order to correctly use this technique, are you using an upstroke when going from a higher string like picking a note or series of notes from the High E string to a the B string which is above the E? And the exact opposite when picking notes from lower to high? If you can manage to understand this, then this is essentially what I think you're doing. At normal speed, it simply looks like alternate picking, but when you slow it down, I think I'm seeing the emphasis I described. Thanks smile.gif

Hi and first thanks for your kind words,I truly appreciate it! smile.gif

And now onto your question.
You got it totally right,I use one upstroke to play last note on E string and first one on B,
same formula is applied in opposite way,one downstroke when going from lower to higher string.
So the point as to use one move(pick attack) while playing to different strings in a row,
simple as that, that's why it's called economy, kill 2 flies with one hit. wink.gif

Only thing that bothers me now is that you said
it looks like regular alternate picking at normal speed. blink.gif

Check THIS ,
at 02:51 I played run up and down with economy(and at 00:50 too),that'll show you how it looks like,
maybe on a bit more higher speed smile.gif

Cheers

Thanks man, that really, really put it into perspective for me.

2 more questions:

1. What kind of pick do you use?? In some of the vids I've seen you're using the absolute biggest pick I've ever seen in my life!

2. Is the neck on your Peavey slightly scalloped? It certainly looks like it.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer that! I guess this is a technique I really need to set some practice time aside for, since I've never really understood it, til now. wink.gif

1.The pick I've used the most is 2.0 mm and Light Pick Heavy tip which is even more than 2.0mm.

2.Neck isn't scalloped at all tho it's Musicman,not Peavey smile.gif
