You've heard me talking about this before but here's a clip of John Petrucci chatting with Rusty Cooley. He mentions this approach as well. It's worth incorporating into your practise to help you bridge the gaps between slow and faster playing. The subject starts around 5:35. The video is on the main page, I don't think it's on Youtube otherwise I'd embed it here.

Well, practicing in some licks or picking in the sofa in different speed isnt a bad idea if i understood the clip?

It's not a bad idea at all. Just try to keep the faster bursts as relaxed as the slower ones. That's the idea of bursts.. they're short enough so that your hand and wrist doesn't get fatigued and tense up too much. smile.gif

Look at 2:42 Ben...seems like he doesn't care about muting. Probably he plays that hard so no intruder noises gets out of the guitar. At this particular part of Rusty's vid it's visible he doesn't rest on the low strings...Looks like another Wylde / Friedman variation tongue.gif

I meant the 2nd video...the one below John's

Yeah Rusty plays with his hand really far back, closer to the bridge.. I think he must have part of his palm resting somewhere though, I can't imagine he has a completely floating hand ?? Who knows ? Rusty's definitely one of a kind smile.gif
