Just in case you missed it... We have a new course up!

Attached Image

It's called Micro Technique and it is one of the most important concepts I have come across in my last 10 years of playing.

It should hopefully clarify things when we give you REC comments along the lines of "you are playing slightly ahead of the beat" or "try to play behind the beat".

Check it out, I think Gab did an excellent job with his explanations / illustrations.

Yup, that's why you see so many on YT playing a cover solo, they hit every note but miss the micro elements and it sounds lifeless.

The micro elements are the seasoning; the spices etc that take a bland soup into a tasty cool.gif casserole. cool.gif

I'll check this out, my playing needs a lot of seasoning, it doesn't even have salt and pepper laugh.gif

Cheers Gab and Kris

I think all these micro-things are what takes people from beginner to more "pro"-sounding. Small bends, dynamics, timing, knowing what notes create different flavors (try adding a major 2nd to a minor chord for that different flavor of sadness or major 2nd on a major for a different flavor of happiness), slides into the first note of a phrase or even into parts of an ongoing phrase - longer slide and shorter slides. All these small things that add to you sounding more confident and pro (as long as you pull them off confidently). smile.gif

Also, I like the small logo for the course on the left side of the banner smile.gif

I think we go through a gradual process as we learn. First we don't know about this kind if stuff, then we realise it's there, then we start trying to practice it, and as we get more advanced - we start prioritising it.

However if you are aware of this stuff as a beginner, I think it can substantially speed up leanring!

These courses are coming through so quickly I don't get chance to try them all laugh.gif

I start one then another appears and I have a look at that then there's the collab and my own lessons and practise to work on, it's burning me out laugh.gif

They all look great though smile.gif

hahaha as these are mini lessons, you don't have to work on the whole thing by once. You can take 1 or 2 exercises and add them into you daily routines. What do you think?

For some maybe but I'm the sort of person that needs to do all or nothing I'm afraid. Doing bits doesn't suit me, too me it's like painting one wall in each room when decorating the house.

Thanks anyway buddy.

Would you like to pick a course for me to try for you?

Cheers

Sure! To show you how random you can pick stuff from this course. Let's jump to "Micro Dynamics" lesson part 2.

There you have 5 ways to play a minor pentatonic scale. Work on each of them, 1 minute every day, which means 5 minutes every day and share your progress in this thread if you want.

Are you in?

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhh

I need to go through part one first. I just can't skip, even now I sometimes pull out a beginners lesson book and work through it to see if I've missed anything.

I'll start work on the Mico Dynamics course from the start wink.gif

Cheers

haha that's even better! you can watch the first part to get into the concepts, but the first exercise appears in part 2, and your overall playing can be affected a lot by incorporating it in your daily practice.

Thanks Gab,

The Poor Man's Blues lesson has made me introduce, or try to introduce, grace notes into my improvs so hopefully the course will help in other areas.

In the micro bending lesson, part three, it states "there are certain notes that we can slightly bend", why is it only certain notes and not all of them?

Cheers

Here's my first attempt, I will learn the licks soon but this is just a mess around, not getting much inspiration from the backing to be honest, I might look for another one wink.gif

hi, this course is really nice, have not practiced much yet been a little busy with few other lessons. But will defy work on this soon. In particular I watched the "micro-timing", ahead /behind the beat concept is really well explained (something I particularly struggle with) I think this will help me a lot.

Also all these recent series of lessons on technique, right hand and left had exercises are also very good (been working on a few of those for a while), in particular I like the musicality of some of those exercises and they are really well explained.

cheers

You can bend all of them, but not all of them will sound that good. The best is to start with the 3rd and the 7th, and the lesson suggests. Once you get used to the technique, you can experiment with other intervals. You always depend on the context, and the chord sounding at the moment when you go for a riskier option.

Awesome! I can hear you practicing dynamics as well here. You micro bending is starting to appear here, but I think that you still have room to make bend a bit more. Most of the times you are not reaching a 1/4 bend, it sounds more like a 1/8. Practicing over my examples to get used to the right sound.

Thanks Gab,

I wasn't sure whether to post them here or in our mentoring thread but I thought here would be better as there is more chance of others seeing /hearing my attempt and hopefully help them too.

In some ways I'm finding micro bends harder than semi tone bends. Are these micro bends also known as blues bends or is that something else?

Re dynamics, I'm really trying to put more dynamics into my playing all the time now, I have got to that part of the course yet but I'm looking fiat's to it.

Cheers

You sure can (and should!) try it with all of them. But for some reason it seems to be that area between b3-3 and b7-7 that works particularly well. There are probably some really nice quarter tones there which we guitarists cannot play unless we use bending (or poorly tuned instruments, ha!)

The early jazz musicians discovered this and those "in betwenen" tones were referred to as "blue" notes (disambiguation: most guitarists nowadays refer to the b5 when they speak about blue/blues note - which is something totally different)

Hi Cael! That's a very cool video focusing on the micro techniques. I like the tone you are using because it has a good amount of distortion and sustain, but it still allows you to manage the dynamics and make it audible.

I can hear micro bending, micro dynamics, and micro timing in your soloing. Great job!

Did you have previous experience with all these topics?

EDIT: I did notice the delay was a bit off, by the way. I had forgotten to change the BPM to 85 (of the backing) from 74 in the preset. Might do another take at some point soon smile.gif

-

The tone is from Neural DSP Plini. I just lowered the gain a bit and so on from the original the preset. I think it's based on the "Electric Sunrise - Solo" preset, but I'm not sure anymore, since I called it "soft solo" and another one "high gain solo" laugh.gif I find that Neural DSP plugins, especially this one, reacts really well to dynamics. Better than other plugins I've used in the past.

I've used the micro techniques in the past, but especially dynamics was tricky with some plugins - almost like the sound was compressed to be equal dynamic. I noticed this with plugins like Guitar Rig 10 years ago, but they all improve and react better and better, I think smile.gif AND I've tried to just be more aware of it too.

A lot of my practicing is "mental" and about awareness and maybe not so much the actual technical side of it, where we might sit and physically practice the dynamics, micro bends and so on for a long time. Same goes for timing, which I'll be the first to admit sometimes is an issue for me. I sometimes adapt a bit of a "floating timing" style and then go back in groove with the beat - sort of back and forth between those, floating about and being locked in. It's something I'm working on and trying to be aware of too, being a bit more locked in and a little less floating about, but timing can require a lot of ACTUAL practice, not just mentally laugh.gif

Maybe I should get a dog like this laugh.gif
