GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Popular Music Today.... The Society Sucks

Posted by: kevin-riff-after-riff Mar 14 2008, 05:54 PM

damn i just came up with this conclusion today, the popular music now sucks! lol i noticed, hip hop and rappin stuff yeah? they play it in clubs, but it seems to appear that these types of music realllyy suck because people in the clubs are having to take drugs to enjoy themselves lol, to get things goin, coz the "music" they are playing, really sucks!
i know all the woodstock stuff, weed etc, but thats like just mild compared to the stronger extacy that the people in these clubs have to take to stop them from being bored!

whilst if you go to a iron maiden concert or whatnot, the music gets the people going, yes there are some stoners in the crowd, but most of them actually like the music and that gives them energy to rock out, they dont need drugs to enjoy themselves, they go to these concerts coz the musics good and all, not because "its cool" (well maybe for some scene kids that the reason)

so my conclusion is that im bored thats why im ranting about this
but also that people (like those people, you understand) are stupid, they clearly dont like that squiggle of noise but they carry on listening to it, torturing their little brains mad.gif i wish good music was in the "scene" sad.gif

Unfortunatly that's the UK for you. I agree how can rap be music? There's hardly any music in it is there? That's one of the reasons i like metal is that not only does it sound good but it takes a lot of skill as well. Club music sucks, i've never been to a club before but i've heard plenty of what they play there and its enough to put me off completely.

Most pop music today sucks indeed, but there are exceptions.

Btw, i think this is like the 2148390184th thread about this hehe.

I agree, theres no harm in any kinda music is thats what makes people happy smile.gif When i go out clubbing i like to boogie to europop laugh.gif laugh.gif But I wouldnt actually listen to that at home... honest unsure.gif

The majority of pop music sucks, but the people listen it, cuz it's simple xD they dont have To deduce anything.
and the metal, the rock, de hard rock, etc. are too complex, and that's what we love!! xD biggrin.gif cool.gif

Sorry for my bad english unsure.gif

Another big complaint I have is there just doesn't seem to be any guitarists in "popular" music anymore. It seems like the lead guitar has faded out.

Well you know, people can "hate" pop or rap or whatever...but sometimes its better to just accept that it keeps some people happy, and that because we are mature musicians we know where the real good music is? wink.gif smile.gif

I have a feeling all the rappers in the US arent to big over in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, or Japan tongue.gif Popular music varies where you go, I mean hell, Dream Evil are virtually unknown in the US, but in Japan....They LOVE them.

It all depends on location.

I just meant that rap in general is big pretty much everywhere. Of course not in like the Himalayas or Antarctica or anything like that, but rap is hugely popular in all of North and South America and most of Europe. I have no idea what they listen to in Asia or the middle East though tongue.gif

lol yeah but it needs to be reminded that rap isnt music, its talking fast, like my gf, she is a great rapper, can never win a arguement.

im not rap bashing, im bashing bad music, not targeting rap! infact rapping is probably one of my favourite form of vocals in a band, i like it when funk bands have a lead vocals person who raps sometimes, like chilis, but anthony can sing as well and write good lyrics with a inner meaning such as "Space may be the final frontier But it's made in a Hollywood basement" etc. i just dont like 50 cent making money from having someone who knows two chords on the keyboard in the back repeating the same damn thing and have half a drummer repeating the same damn thing and have his friends goin "yeah!" once in a while... although i do have a secret favour for ludacris there are some pretty good stuff in there tongue.gif

As much as I am a total metalhead, one could feasibly argue that all metal is just demonic trash with no talent and animal noise vocals - now all of you here know its a little more refined than that:- thats mainstream opinion, truth is that your perception of other genres of music is pretty much what media outlets tell you, unless you yourselves happen to delve deeper and make investigations of your own.

I remember when I first listened to metal, I hated it, but with generally exposure to anything you can get used to it and even come to really enjoy it - you find your niché in a particular area.

Make no mistake, even if you dont think a record is good theres generally always a LOT of talent coming from somewhere inputted into it, most people here could not produce something as good as your average rap or dance record even if they had the kit to do so.

This is true for death metal, or sreamo. I personally hate it, but
some people like trash and others like other trash.

Does this make sense to u?

Ehhh, I've had this argument so many times with some many different people. I may be totally wrong, but perhaps the people who exclusively listen to the popular music are kind of ignorant to some of the other alternates available. When most people hear I like metal music, they say some thing like "So you like Metallica then?" wacko.gif They may just listen to what ever is on the radio or because all their friends are listening to it, even though they may not enjoy it themselves.

The only problem I have with all the "popular" music (besides the fact I don't care for it rolleyes.gif) is that the people who preform it are waaay outclassed by artists like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Vai, Blind Guardian, etc, but these guys and hundreds others never get the mainstream recognition that they deserve. Instead, generally talentless rap artists or the newest pop-punk band get all of the radio play time and various music awards that are better suited for the people who actually deserve to be recognized.

Yeah, I think the whole continuum album is very good. And Try. The main riff on the song try is awesome biggrin.gif I just don't like some of his lyrics when they make him sound like a whiny middle/upper class class guy or when he gets too depressive.. it's like cheer up john, you're a millionaire doing what you love, stop whining about how your BMW won't start (okay bit of an exaggeration, but really I like the guy) tongue.gif

but never underestimate the power of good old simple 4/4 hit..it is very hard to "hit" the wright atmosphere, and the melody that is as stupid that can be,but drown milions of people to it...for example...there is one very stupid song..calld "Umbrella"..ela...e...e...e....thatis so stupid and simplle line...but top charts.millions of dollars....ars...ars..a...a...smile.gif

just for this thread.. i present to you.. a techno song.. that my bassist wrote.. in about 10 minutes biggrin.gif I don't mind rap at all.. i can't stand "Gangsta Rap, or UnderGround Rap" I like rap that has a message and tells a story for anyone from the UK i really enjoy " The Streets" and i like stuff by some more reputable rap artists.. this comeing from a complete metalhead. Techno music is the classic rock of today.. all the hippies seem to listen to techno now.. or "electronic music" Its not all bad stuff groups like "Infected Mushroom" and "Daft Punk" are really creating some impressive music dispite the lack of "instrumental talant" It still takes a keen ear to create such intricate melodies and beats. Really all and all music is meant to be listened to and enjoyed and if anyone is doing that over any genre of music then the artists have succeeded.. On the level of Pop Music.. music that is created for the soul purpose of being catchy and making money, dragging in minds that havn't had the time to find their own taste and therefore follow the crowd.. this music i do not like.. i don't mind indie pop artists.. indie music is kinda fun biggrin.gif theres my rant.. listen to the song if you want.. its actually kinda fun to listen to smile.gif

im gunna post this and edit the song in later as im having troubles with it..

Popular music in large part seems to be on a global scale, whatever is popular on MTV in the United States. This is not because the music on MTV is particularly good, just that bad music is one of the US's chief exports. It's not just music, but the culture and style associated with it. If you would reflect on what RHCP meant when they coined the term "Californication", you can realize what they are talking about when you put it in this context. It's not necessarily talent in music, but there is definite marketing talent and promo talent involved. A lot of people in the US listen to trash because that's what is available to them on the radio. I know if I listen to my "rock" station, it's either Super Tramp or Nickelback. Neither of these bands do I get excited about listening to. Don't get mad at other people for making this stuff popular, just enjoy what you enjoy and be done with it.

Also, about metal concerts, I've had many a beer with many a metal head at many a metal show in many a concert hall. Don't kid yourself. People will take all sorts of "mind altering" substances when they're at a place to seek novelty/enjoyment for no other reason than they believe that it will heighten their experience. At a metal show, I drink several beers then stop just before the band comes on. This drug phenomenon is not limited to pop music, you can even find it at jazz and piano bars.

Take heart and know that everything is cyclical. Rap/Hip-hop dominate the mainstream, but if 2 or 3 good rock acts take the stage around the same time, it might swing back in Rock's direction.

Well, I dont think you should start a band to get mainstream attention, Sure, always try to increase your fanbase and get your music heard. But some of those bands you mention that dont get mainstream attention, I'm sure there still happy without it, Their there to play the music they love, the music they want to hear, for the people who want to hear it, And if mainstream doesnt like it, Too bad I Say wink.gif
