Epiphone LP Studio seems can be had for $300-400...

Anyone have one of these that can comment on the sound?

I won't be spending ~1K+ on a guitar anytime soon so looking for an alternative... something that would make for a good blues guitar.

Well, LP studio was designed for studio musicians who wanted a good sounding guitar, but could deal without the special trimmings on the looks. So if you;re on a budget and are looking for the best sound, that looks to be your best bet.

some of those are way expensive for knock off guitars, while others look like a complete steal

i own a studio, and also a lp from the custom shop. i will vouch for the studio. last december gibson had them reduced $200. mine has beautiful tone, and great sustain. you can shred just fine on a lp. i have easier to play guitars, but always gravitate back to the lp's. for obvious reasons.

edit: if i were to get my first lp, i would get a studio premium (the one with the AAA top). Even a standard only has a AA top. But i would get it on ebay. I have seen those in mint condition that went for about $1000, nearly new, or even brand new. There are sellers who are very reliable on ebay, if you know what the red flags are, and can judge a reliable seller, i would go that rout. You also get to see the top before you buy it. That is how i got my studio (it is a premium). I haver rarely seen a top as beautiful as it has on any guitar. if you ever buy on ebay, make sure you research how it should be packed, and talk to the seller about how he is going to pack it. and make sure you ask him is the neck has any problems, and that he guarantees that. if he does not give a positive response, pass him buy. any red flag, just move on, not worth the risk.

Dean Evo Noir

Dean Evo Special

I have played them both, and they are both an outstanding value -far superior to epiphone. No way are you going to get this level of quality from from gibson or epiphone for the same price.

The Evo special might be better suited for a blues man.

Ever played/heard or checked the build quality of any of the guitars there? Some of the prices in there seem a bit in the "too good to be true" zone:

LP copy, set neck, spalted maple top, $209??

Trent Reznor plays the Evo Noir live these days. I suspect because they sound OK and they're not exensive to smash. NIN's not really a guitar band though.

Have you checked on the going rate of labor in the countries where these are manufactured? Less surprising after you do that.

right, gibson is not going to sell at these prices. gibson can't get away with manufacturing it's guitars in sweat shops, and does not have access to the child labor market.

The Agiles are made in Korea just like a lot of other relatively inexpensive guitar brands. Mine was, and someone paid quite a bit more than $200 for it and it's not as nice as these guitars. They're nicer on paper than most of the Epiphones at twice the price.

I've been reading up on these guitars over the last couple of days. I think the surface of the top is a veneer rather than a full piece of that type of wood. Their progression from their low-end to their high end is interesting. For the LP copies, the body's mahogany, the top is maple and as you go up in price, that maple gets thicker. The electronics change a lot as you move up too. Still seems like a lot of guitar for the money.

They seem to have a lot more positive feedback out there too. Some complaints about shipping damage, but not much else which is a good sign.

Don't kid yourself that Korea is anything is like Japan or Nashville. The guitars may be largely of North Korean origin. And there are reported findings of atrocious labor conditions still being found in South Korea. Whatever the specifics, guitars at this price are either (1) pieces of crap, or (2) largely products of exploited low paid labor working under inhumane conditions, or a combination of the above. Which was your question. No magic in economics, you get what you pay for.

Evan,

Been doing more searching, and those Deans sure seem like a winner... Had a question. Do the two guitars sound the same? Are you basically paying extra for the Special because of added cosmetics?

Evo Noir official page

I think most of the price difference is purely cosmetic. First, they both have Grover tuners which is a really nice touch for a guitar this price. The bridge appears to be the same for both guitars only difference being nickel vs. black color and they had a solid feel to me. The necks felt identical to me -again only difference being the inlays on the special vs. the 'stealth' look of the evo fingerboard. Both necks are rosewood fingerboard over mahogany just like on a real Les Paul. Other than the pickups, I think these guitars are identical in tone. My personal preference was for the sound of the Noir. Both guitars have really THICK sounding tone with all that mahogany not budget sounding at all -trust me, I just liked the more modern sound of the noir - it wasn't over the top, but it wasn't low vintage type output or anything like that.

I recommended these to you, because sometimes when you pick up a guitar -even for just short time, it makes a lasting impression, and your post brought these guitars to mind. I was really surprised at how great these played when I tried them.

Cool, thanks for the info... I actually found a Dean Evo Special Select which is the next step up from the Special at a used music store at a real good price (about the same as a new Epiphone LP Studio) going to go try it out next week.
