That's what i mean! It sucks to hear the string ringing E and the amp playing D or whatever....unless you are stone deaf. So that's why you can't play Variax on low volumes because you will ALWAYS here the wrong note coming from string ringing!!!
What was that supposed to mean?

well, i can only say what i think it means. which is, one has to be careful about technology, it will suck out your soul, and you won't even know that has happened. i quit watching tv for the same reason some time ago.

not an original observation, this is an author who has written books on this subject, surrender of individuality and free thinking to technology. This is his most famous book. He has another directed more specifically at technology in general. But the thesis is similar in both avenues.

http://www.amazon.com/Amusing-Ourselves-De...4945&sr=8-1

i see this happening, which is why watching tv is painful for me.

i like the guitar to maintain a solid tie to what it has been for the past 5,000 years, i see no need to take it past the general area it was in the Jimmy Page/Hendrix era, not in a technological sense.

----------------------------------------------------------

Back on the subject of tuning, the Winding Roads thing (where he tuned it down a semi) has made me think that is not a bad idea to do sometimes, maybe on one of my guitars.

Its less of a problem than you might think unless you are playing very quietly - the Amp sound (or headphones) totally overwhelms it. I have had no problem with it at all, and my pitching and playing by ear is such that it really would bug me if I could hear it ...

standard tuning.

sometimes drop D, but only when I really have to. Most songs sound just as good in standard just translating the chords/notes/etc. to standard.

Why i am asking is - i practice a lot in the late hours, after midnight and than i can't go loud on amp so in most cases together with the amp i can hear the string ringing so that's why i was curious about Variax! smile.gif

standard. drop d bugs me just because all my guitar-playing friends use it to get "easier power chords DUH". i know there are alot of cool things you can do in d, though. i've been using it with my band per other guitarist playing his songs in d.

I hate headphones on my head! My head gets 100 degrees hotter with headphones on. Add concentration on scales and sweeps to it and you get a hell of an A-Bomb consequences in your room! biggrin.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif I guess the Variax way is just not for you smile.gif

Here's an idea - Ibanez have a beautiful guitar called the Jem, and I have heard that Rusty Cooley has just released a new signature 7 string guitar called the RC7 - i would guess they would be great for you laugh.gif
