Lots of jamming but also many questions.

We tend to discuss thought processes / strategies rather then specific licks - the Internet is full licks but it's harder to find the deeper stuff!

It was really cool to see you drop by. Please note that the next stream is in 2 weeks - as I will be away fishing cool.gif

Thanks, you did great on the backing track challenges, sorry about duplicating the Polka one with someone else but when I'm on my tablet, if I open a new tab in the browser to search for some BTs your stream stops so I can't hear it smile.gif

Cheers buddy.

Thanks Kris I got one of the best tips I could ever have gotten in your live session today. My playing drastically jumped into a new "realm" and I have you to thank for unlocking that. I've been stumbling around learning difficult songs and got quite a bit of technique but something one specific thing you talked about really clicked for me. Thanks again

Yeah! The section about how you practice new technique now compared to before. Metronome vs Slowly to a backing track. Keeping it musical vs playing it "statically correct". And how you mentioned focusing on posture and being relaxed while doing that.

Somehow I've only heard these "things" as segments and thereby had real trouble trying to incorporate them all at the same time while maybe practicing like I did before. I had this meltingpot of technical information about how I "should" be practicing which all just led to strain somewhere else. I guess someone had to tell me in a "simpler" way HOW to do that and not just WHAT to do.

Agreed! That stuff was a big game changer for me - because it meant I could stop worrying about all the tiny details and just play. And most importantly it would allow me to progress faster than ever! Here is the replay:

Hey mate - we can't plug GMC enough. Thanks!!!

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 29 2017, 09:27 PM

I was wondering if you found it annoying because at one point, you explained what Todd's Bootcamp is and then quickly said "Plug OVER".

I'll carry on mentioning then, so long as I have a viable comment smile.gif I just thought maybe you was thinking "I wish Phil would stop mentioning GMC like this, it looks bad"

Cheers buddy and thanks for the great advice smile.gif

Yes I try to always be clear with people so that they know when there is a commercial message and when there isn't. Youtube is so full of hidden sponsored stuff (which I hate) so I try to avoid doing it myself.

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 29 2017, 09:41 PM

Now I don't know if I should keep my comments GMC free? unsure.gif As I said, it was more of a reference for you. I have at times told people about lessons for techniques that they have been asking about, like last week with the sweep picking query.

No just keep doing what you do - you are genuinely asking about GMC related stuff, that's perfect! smile.gif Couldn't have done it without you mate wub.gif

Posted by: Phil66 Jan 29 2017, 11:17 PM

Cheers buddy,

It would be great if a byproduct of the genuine questions is some people coming to have a look and deciding that this is most definitely the best guitar related site around and joining up.

Have you thought about once a month maybe giving a free one month subscription for the best question or backing track suggestion? Financially you wouldn't be losing out because they aren't members already. Maybe it would get people returning to the live stream more to try and win the coveted prize wink.gif

Just food for thought mate, I'm not interfering.

Cheers

I've isolated that problem I'm having, it isn't my left hand. It is my right hand. When I play faster my right hand isn't palm muting the A string for some reason so, my left-hand index finger is "scared" to leave the A string. It's as though it's trying to cover the right hand's back so to speak wink.gif

wirecast has a scaled down free version just for youtube - which might work depending on your needs. Unfortunately the pro version is way superior to the free streaming alternatives I found when researching a year ago..

Posted by: Todd Simpson May 20 2017, 03:40 AM

The only FREE version of wirecast that i found leaves a HUGE watermark across the entire screen as you are broadcasting sad.gif I searched and searched and all of the youtube approved options all seem quite pricey. sad.gif They used to host their own streaming and just let you do it for free on youtube!! Now you have to go buy a third party streaming bit of software to stream on youtube sad.gif lame!!!!!

Can you give us a list of the gear and software you are using to create your live streams on youtube? Looks like a very spiff production smile.gif

Todd

Thanks Todd!

I use the built-in imac camera for the face shot, and a canon XH A1 for the guitar shot. I use a third party software called iGlasses to control exposure and white balance of the built in cam.

I use wirecast pro to blend all three shots (including the desktop shot). Wirecast also allows me to delay both audio and video - so that I can make sure all the different sources are (somewhat!) in sync when streaming.

Kemper for guitar sound, connected via spdif to the built in optical-in on imac and then to logic pro - a stereo signal is importnat for cool delays/reverb. I also use logic pro to monitor the kemper signal without latency.

I use a cheap TSM condenser mic for my voice, connected to a TC-Helicon VoiceLive Touch 2 for realtime compression and sometimes vocal effects, connected to the computer via apogee duet 2.

I use "sound siphon" software to send a mix of system audio + my guitar and vocal signal to the viewers, to be able to jam over requested backings.

I have created a multi input device through Macos' audio-midi setup, to mix the duet 2 sound interface with the built-in optical input.

I use four cheap photo lamps for lighting + lots of guitars!! laugh.gif

that first 3 minutes or so , very tasty .
I love the sound of my emg's , but I do miss the dynamics of passive .
I thinks it due to the fact of being left handed , there are so few left handed guitars , so they actually use right handed electronics parts . It's not to big a deal until you come to the volume , no one understands that to put a right handed volume on a left handed guitar makes it backwards , 90 % of your gain is in by the time you get to 2 , I"ve had my tech search high and low , it seems every once and a while all parts might have them , but they get gobbled up

Thanks mate!

I am not very familiar with the LH guitar issue. However I can certainly relate to active pickups missing dynamics, I tried EMGs on a guitar once and I ended up never playing it. I would recommend medium output pickups except extreme metal or 'extreme vintage'.

Great one again Kris, thank you.

Thank you for the answer about developing phrasing too, I hope it helped others too. I also kept it running after I said I had to go so I did hear your answer to playing over different time signatures. It's hard to ask the full question on there because of only being allowed 200 characters. What I struggle with is if I'm playing over something in 3/4 time, like Always With Me Always With You, it's hard to accent notes on the 1st beat of the bars when your so used to playing 4/4. I hope that makes sense.

I wonder if it's an idea to have a featured question on your live streams. Maybe it would encourage people to come and have a look. It's just an idea, I'm not telling you how to do you job wink.gif You could select a question from the forum each week that you think is particularly interesting and have a "Great Question Of The Week" feature when you feel like a break from playing after an hour or so.

Cheers

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Oct 31 2017, 01:30 PM

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the suggestion - I am not necessaily against prepared content for the streams (such as fetaured questions, instructional content). However I do enjoy the spontaneity - and I think that is what keeps them fresh. Perhaps you would liek to choose a question from the forum and ask me every Sunday - could be cool!

About the 3/4 time - I am sorry to say that I have never actively learned or practiced tricky time signatures - I simply have no experience analysing them. Like I told you on facebook - if I can tap my foot I am usually good - and I don't really see the purpose of counting... Sorry mate can't give you a more helpful answer here.

No worries mate. I just noticed my passing sounded odd when I played over Satriani's Always With Me Always With You because I didn't know it was 3/4. I was trying to play a chord thing like he does at the beginning but tapping 4/4, then I realised.

Finally got around to finding the answer to my question. Not sure I fully understand the answer rolleyes.gif but I kinda get what you mean. I guess at my level, we want to "know" that we are playing the "right" notes by position rather than our ears telling us.

If anyone is interested scroll to 2:43:48.

Thanks Kris.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 16 2017, 03:46 AM

WOW. That is a seriously complex and EXPENSIVE rig you have there. I was hoping that others could copy your setup. Sadly I doubt many folks would be able to spend the kind of money it would take just to get all the software your using, much less get all the hardware. Since youtube stopped doing their own streaming and put the burden on users, it has slowed down the number of folks streaming quite a bit and now I can see why. It's crazy expensive!

The only free live streaming left is something like INSTAGRAM or FACEBOOK LIVE or TWITCH. Youtube has priced everyone out of the market it seems sad.gif

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 16 2017, 10:15 AM

Todd are you referring to my setup? Yes - wirecast is expensive but at this point well worth it as it has unparalleled functionality.

If I got it right- you asked about playing all over the fretboard. The standard answer would be to learn the 5-7 boxes of the scale, learn where the root notes are and then slowly start connecting them together - ie by using sliding technique.

What I was trying to say, is that not only is this method slow - but I think it is kinda boring.

So I suggest you learn new scale position by trying to play some music/licks in them. If you are having problems with that, there is no need to push things. Remember countless guitarists have built a career using just the very first pentatonic box. So you can stick to that one for a couple of more months if you are not ready for new scale positions.

Posted by: Phil66 Nov 17 2017, 10:13 PM

Thanks Kris,

I guess I'm still paranoid about playing a "wrong" note so I try to visualise the patterns. I use extended pentatonic the most, I suppose I could try adding the full major/minor notes into that to start with?

Thank you

Phil

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 18 2017, 04:51 PM

I"ve heard nothing but good things about WIRECAST smile.gif It's evidently the best way to go for what it does. The price puts it outside of most students budgets for sure. The good news is, there are free options, like the new INSTAGRAM "STORIES" function, which allows any instagram user to stream live from their phone, also FACEBOOK has free live streaming, and of course TWITCH (intended as a game platfoorm) will work as well. So don't fret (pun!) over the high cost of wirecast folks, you just need your cell phone and instagram/facebook app to start live streaming smile.gif Of course, it's much more basic, but it's hard to complain for the price smile.gif

Yes this is def my favourite approach! And don't let fear of wrong notes lead you development - you will end end playing perfectly but very boring - at best!

If you are not making any such mistakes you are playing way too safe. I do mistakes all the time and I love my mistakes - because often they will lead me into new territory. (even if many of them do sound bad)

Hello Kris,

A lot of backing tracks can be monotonous, it's hard to find some that have some kind of "building" in them. I'm wondering, do you prefer dedicated backing tracks or actual commercial album tracks to jam along to like the two I gave you on Sunday?

Cheers

If I dig the song - a commercial is much better. As you mentioned they do have the build-up - like any good song.

There really are no bad choices - unless the sound/production is low quality. if I wanted tracks that match my preferences I would not ask you guys to suggest backings.

So the more diversity - the better! This is how I would advise anybody to practice.
