GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Halcyon Way Pitching On Our Shout Remake!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 16 2014, 05:54 PM

Our very own SPOCK is producing a remake of SHOUT by Tears for Fears done with a more aggressive Rock/Metal Vibe and I'm pitching in on Guitars. It looks like Jon Bodan (Guitars/Vocals, he's the guy with the Mohawk) from Atlanta Metal band Halcyon Way is going to do the vocals! Shaping up to be a very cool project!

Here he is doing his thing.

We are using Apple LOGIC X for the DAW and it's been very handy. You can choose to have all the sound files "stick" to the project file so you just move one file back and forth and everything goes with it. If you've got a mac, logic is worth getting. It's available in the app store for $200. It used to be $1,200 so it's a bargain.

I'm really diggin' it. It's still the scratch track phase, but it's coming together quickly now. Finding and manipulating the right drum parts took the longest amount of time. Also the bass is still midi and had to be reworked to fit the new groove - but I plan to put real bass on it.

It will be interesting to see how it compares to Disturbed's cover

You can tell it's "Shout" but it sounds nothing like the Disturbed version, luckily I had an idea in my head before I even knew that version existed.

I think Todd said it best when he heard it, or the concept of it, "it's a Re-imaging of the song".

It definitely has my style, I can't seem to shake that, but as I said in the other thread a while back, I was going for a feel of Korn meets Tool meets A Perfect Circle. Once Todd's parts are on it - it may sound totally different, as well as the vocalist.

I have some vocal ideas to throw his way, since I don't want it to sound like the original song, but he'll have creative freedom to do what feels right to him. I just hope the music itself pushes his creative process away from the original and Disturbed versions.

I'm hoping for a feel that, if played live, would make the audience bounce and mosh.

Kinda feeling a little naked because I recorded it running my Marshall direct - playing it through twice, then panning the channels; however Todd wants me to run direct into Logic from the Focusrite unit and use the tones supplied inside Logic, then he'll take that direct signal and run it through one of his more professional units. Which is sort of weird to me, because you (or I at least) have a different pick attack depending on what tone I'm hearing.

But hey - it's all for fun anyway, and he knows what he's doing. I'm more than honored that Todd is on board and the vocalist.

Sounds good. I never really liked Disturbed's version, I dont know why, just didnt. A more tool-ish, Korn-y version sounds more interesting.
I really liked what A Perfect Circle done to 'Imagine'.

It's still a little too early but it does show the general feel for the heaviness and direction, but it's close.

I'd like to keep it sort of under wraps until we have it all down. To really surprise people when they hear the entire version against what they're use to hearing.
