GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Designing My Website

Posted by: Pavel Jul 5 2007, 10:10 PM

Hey guys! I started making a new design for my website and here is what i came up with! Please have a look and tell me what you think! Forms, color suggestions - all is welcome! smile.gif

http://pavel910.homeftp.net/HFS%20Sharing/Website/index.html

Posted by: mattacuk Jul 5 2007, 10:15 PM

Well I like the layout alot! but im really not too sure on the colour scheme - specifically ists not easy to read the text. I think it would be good to have your picture in the banner also, that way you are likely to remember the site more! The more you can link the design to yourself and you interests the better! smile.gif

Posted by: Robin Jul 5 2007, 10:18 PM

I would personally go for something very simple.

Like for instance: http://creepcolony.net/

Posted by: JVM Jul 5 2007, 10:19 PM

Hey pavel, I do some 2d design/graphics art stuff (though I don't have much experience with websites, some but not much). If you want I might be able to do some images for you or something. I agree with mattacuk, the text is a bit hard to read. Also I have to say I'm not digging the background too much tongue.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 5 2007, 10:26 PM

I am always having troubles with the content part design. I like the way the header tuned out but i never know how to make the damn text part!

Ok i removed it from that link and will try to work some more on the text part. Will keep you updated! Thanks for replies!

Posted by: LanceB Jul 5 2007, 10:32 PM

Hey Pavel if you ever have problems with color try using this web page:

http://colorblender.com/

It builds a palette around a color you choose.

Posted by: FretDancer69 Jul 5 2007, 10:40 PM

Pavel, the link wont work anymore.

Posted by: MickeM Jul 5 2007, 10:52 PM

How about a movie clip of you with the guitar and you say "Are you ready" and then you play a killer riff? laugh.gif

Nah sorry, all I got was 404 not found :-)
Will check again later

Hey Pavel!

If you're not a master of web design you may want to look into a Content Management System like PostNuke which uses PHP.

Here are some examples:

www.sofakinggamers.com
www.predatorial-tendencies.com

You can download skins for free or design your own (which takes learning PHP, I've always just downloaded them)

This takes some time to learn to use PNphp and what not, but probably less than creating your own web from scratch. There is also an addon for forums called pnPHPbb2 which are really, really easy to add-on.

Thank you all for your links and suggestions! I just got a killer idea for a design! Work in progress and i already see it's gonna be 100 times better than the last one! I removed the previous file - i will let you all know when i put a sample of a new one! Thank you again!

Ok, turned out to be ready pretty soon! There it is:

looks great, but in my opinion i think you should go for a "Technological" layout, idk if you have seen them, they have like metal borders with tubes, glass, lights and whatnot, i used to design stuff like these back when i was very interested in it.

But still, looks great Pavel, specially the font and effect of the title, great job man!

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 01:07 AM

Well i am not a big pro in Photoshop so for now i will stick to this simple design! Thanks for comments!

i used to do stuff like these, i would gladly make you a cool design, but unfortunately its been a long time since i use Photoshop, tried it a while ago but cant remember anything. So yea i guess you should stick to that design, simple but effective! wink.gif

Posted by: Aaron Jul 6 2007, 01:22 AM

pretty sick website!!

"Welcome to the Pavel Denisjuk website!
Interested in shred? You're at the right place!"
i love that line! laugh.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 02:05 AM

Ok from now on you can see the progress on my new website using the official link: http://www.pavel-music.info/

I decided to upload it even if it's only the main page - but i like this design so much that i want to get rid of the old one! smile.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 12:17 PM

Biography section is updated so if you want to read some - check it out!

http://www.pavel-music.info/

EDIT: a friend of mine gave me a link to some "metal surface" tutorial so i checked it out and created a better version for my site. Now it looks just like it should i think!

Posted by: JVM Jul 6 2007, 06:57 PM

I don't like all the rips and stuff in the metal, TBH. The metal looks good because it looks solid and strong, but when it has a bunch of rips in it like that, it doesn't look like solid metal but more like tin foil or paper tongue.gif But it's definitely looking better!

Also, I personally find the italics a little harder to read, but that could just be me. One thing about your bio page that needs changing is you (I think) want it to look pretty professional. Meaning you need to go back through and change those i's to I's and whatnot, but mostly it looks very good.

JVM is the Tough Critic...

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 07:17 PM

Ok the "I" thing is solved. I also may create a header without the rips but than again the part below the NavBar looks pretty good with rips!

Thanks for suggestions!

Posted by: FretDancer69 Jul 6 2007, 08:13 PM

hey pavel, looks better! just a suggestion, maybe you wanna add some pics to the Biography section. Probably pics of your first guitars (if you still have them) or pics when you were little, pics of you playing guitar when you were younger, etc. just an idea.

Keep it up!

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 08:27 PM

Yeah that's a great idea! Sure - i will add them these days! For now i want to find the definite design so later i can work on content, text, pictures, etc.

A friend of mine who likes to spend time with Photoshop gave me a little suggestion and now when i did it it looks pretty cool. Now the metal is more "SOLID" biggrin.gif

Posted by: JVM Jul 6 2007, 08:33 PM

Much better! Just a simple bevel and edge rounding it looks like, but it helps the look a lot. I agree that the rips in the main section are fine, btw.

Posted by: Pavel Jul 6 2007, 08:51 PM

Cool! Thanks a lot to all who replied in this topic! I'll let you know when i update the whole website with pictures and content!

Posted by: Pavel Jul 7 2007, 09:47 PM

Maybe, if it's possible to make links, you could keep a link to your page in your gmc-singature. smile.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 7 2007, 11:07 PM

There you go MikeM - got a link in the sig!! Thanks for suggestion! smile.gif

Posted by: Layzer Jul 8 2007, 12:17 AM

can't seem to load the page

Posted by: JVM Jul 8 2007, 04:03 AM

Pavel one suggestion would be to "engrave" your headline texts, so it looks like it's cut into the metal. I think that'd make it about perfect. Example:

Posted by: kahall Jul 8 2007, 04:52 AM

Pavel, I enjoyed reading your Bio. Damb, you are only one year older than my son.

That's looking better and better - I like the engraving a lot (and I love the photo of you when you wrer about 3 smile.gif)

Posted by: Guitarman700 Jul 8 2007, 07:24 PM

Nice! Ever considered website design?
And That photo of you is, for lack of a better word, cute.

Posted by: CrashOops Jul 8 2007, 07:26 PM

Looking good Pavel.
are you planning on having some of your original material available to listen to on your website? I'd Like to hear more of your actual music, instead of just bits and pieces from the lessons smile.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 8 2007, 07:58 PM

Guitarman700: this is my first design that has a decent look. I would sure love to do websites but i need a bit more knowledge of Photoshop and coding.

CrashOops: yes - but the stuff i recorded by now is either unfinished or is a crappy quality record so i don't want to upload any of it. After 11th this month i will finally be free of university and i hope i will finally sit down and finish practicing one of my newest compositions including orchestral arrangements which also needs a lot of work to put it in Cubase. I only have it noted with Sibelius so i'll have to spend a couple of days transferring it from notes to actual record! smile.gif

Posted by: JVM Jul 8 2007, 08:32 PM

I have to say I never really liked off-centered websites much, is there any way you can center it on the page, or fill up the right side with like, links or something?

Posted by: Pavel Jul 8 2007, 08:44 PM

What resolution are you using??? It's centered only on 1024x768! I'll have to fix that!

Posted by: JVM Jul 8 2007, 10:24 PM

Aha! I use 1280x1024, that comes from a lifetime of gaming in hi-res tongue.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 8 2007, 10:33 PM

I updated the equipment page! Pics included smile.gif

JVM: i solved the resolution problem! It should be perfectly centered for you now! Thanks for the tip! I would have forgotten that if you didn't mention! I know a lot of people use high res today! But i have 17" monitor so i never think of high res users!

Posted by: JVM Jul 8 2007, 10:34 PM

Yes, it looks great now biggrin.gif

Posted by: Pavel Jul 8 2007, 10:53 PM

Also i wanted to ask those who visited my website - if you find any bug with preview or something please let me know here on forum!

I open the website with Mozilla Firefox and it works great. When i open it with Internet Explorer the Equipment page is all screwed up but all the others work perfect - and i don't know what's wrong!

So please - if you find something - let me know what browser you are using and what page contains the bug! smile.gif Thanks

Posted by: JVM Jul 8 2007, 11:27 PM

Yeah I use Firefox, no problems that I can see.

Posted by: LanceB Jul 8 2007, 11:55 PM

I'm currently in school for webdesign and use this site often when I only have one browser type to try:

http://browsershots.org/

It allows you to test multiple browsers on multiple operating systems.

yeah. like you said, the Equipment page has some bugs. Im using Internet Explorer. The page actually stretches horzontally, just like when you have a very large sig (--->direction).

Posted by: stratman33 Jul 9 2007, 01:15 AM

I'm wondering how you make your own website? huh.gif

Posted by: JVM Jul 9 2007, 01:28 AM

I hate to be picky (really, its a curse) but is there any way you can do the bevel thing you do around the edges to the rips on the side? Cause they look much more flat than the other edges, so it looks a bit odd tongue.gif

Posted by: JVM Jul 9 2007, 01:40 AM

I don't think you can without buying the URL at least - but I could be wrong.

Posted by: LanceB Jul 9 2007, 02:03 AM

Technically you could have a free web page.

First off you would have to have a personal server to host your files. Second you would need a domain name but unfortanently domain names are not free so if you were going to the complete free route your web address would be 94.266.26.245 or something similar.

Not awesome.com =(

Well not exactly you could have an older computer running Microsoft's IIS but it wouldn't be too reliable. But hey if you are going to do it for free you have to cut corners biggrin.gif .

Posted by: Pavel Jul 9 2007, 08:40 AM

Internet Explorer sucks so badly it's unbelievable! He creates his own bugs for no reason!!! GRRRRRRRR

JVM: i tried the bevel on those edges the first time we talked about it and it doesn't look good. It's much better this way.

EDIT:

Internet Explorer is horrible for writing websites for - its CSS is broken, and don't even get me started on its JavaScript and DOM ... Firefoex always just seems to work fine smile.gif

You should title your pages, ie :

<head>
<title>Pavel Music - Biography</title>
</head>

This means that this shows up as where someone is if they have multiple tabs open in firefox say, instead of saying "http://www.pavel-music.info/" at the top of the page it will give you : "Pavel Music - Biography" instead.

Similarly like it says "Designing My Website - Masterclass Guitar Forum" at the top of this particular forum page. smile.gif

I realize it's a bit pedantic, but its much more tidy. tongue.gif

Nah...whatever - i'll just let it be like that!

Posted by: Owen Jul 28 2007, 02:45 PM

It'll be because your using frames, you need to put the title in the file that ties the different sections all together.

Posted by: Pavel Jul 28 2007, 03:01 PM

I don't use frames! But when you open SOURCE in Mozilla it says like i am. But if you View Source in IE it's all normal.

I guess maybe it's because the website is not in the root server folder for website. But is in subfolder.

Posted by: Owen Jul 28 2007, 03:31 PM

I use Opera, and the source says thats what it is as well, strange tongue.gif

HTML seems in order for the file to display the title.

Found the problem:

http://www.xgteam.com/pavel/

Is the original link yes, thats where its hosted, when I go there, it displays the title, you have some sort of masking redirect, am I correct, because the page location doesnt change when I go to the Biography page say.

Therefor to change the title, you'd have to use whatever controls the domain name provider gives.

Posted by: Pavel Jul 28 2007, 04:04 PM

Yeah that's the original link!

Well, anyway, i getting a new domain very soon and will have my own host for my website so it will work fine than! It will be www.paveldenisjuk.com and the problem will be solved because i will also pay for hosting.

Thanks for putting your time into it Owen!

Posted by: Sircraigery Jul 29 2007, 05:21 AM

You what the site needs?

A nicer backround. I suggest something with a bunch of planets and galaxies. Then a "Heman" type chick in a fur bikini standing on the side, holding a giant f*cking lazer beam....just protecting.

Other than that the site is top notch. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Pavel Aug 28 2007, 05:35 AM
