We all have techniques that we're not so good at, but we're trying to improve.

I'm not too hot on 'inside' picking and sweeping.

I'd like us all (and I mean everyone, instructors, long time members..) to share the techniques that we're not so hot at and after we've got quite a lot of replies we can start collecting together loads of links that contain useful advice & knowledge about each technique. smile.gif

For example,

Sweep Picking

Post links here to interesting and useful articles, GMC threads, videos etc..

Palm Muting

Links

and we can all pool our knowledge of things that might help each other.. or just give some inspiration. smile.gif

I just started with Hybrid picking (using the pick and fingers) and a GMC lesson helped me with that a lot! BUT...I can't remember which one was it, I mean, I know which one it is, but I can't remember the name, let me look for it,

(5mins later)

oh I found it...

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Killer...-Richie-Kotzen/

That is one great lesson to isolate the technique, it's not really easy, but once you master it, you feel like a golden shiny light from the heavens...sounds good? then do it biggrin.gif

I started really slow, painfully slow, to get the hold on the finger technique, and gradually sped up,

Yeah that's a fun technique.. I sometimes play around with the hybrid technique sometimes but I've never put any real effort into it. I look forward to seeing how it complements your playing ! smile.gif

Todd here wink.gif For me it's probably sweep picking as well! There are some guys that really shine on this technique and I've just never been one of them. I like the way sweeping sounds and everything, but it was never one of those things I felt compelled to learn. As a result I don't do it very much, and so without practice, you don't get better! smile.gif

I would like to round this out a bit. Lately, I've added "Tripeggios" in to my lessons which are sort of like small sweeps mixed with a triad. Eventually , I plan to work in full sweeps.

On the other end, Palm muting is something that feels so natural for me that it feels odd when I don't do it. It's almost the inverse of my experience sweep picking. I've spent sooooo much time muting and picking and working on pick articulation and accuracy that it sort of happens by itself these days. Again goes to show, whatever you spend time on you'll get better at, and where you have gaps in practice, you end up with gaps in play. Filling those gaps is a truly noble goal.

Tripeggios ? I love that name ! I'm also wondering if it's the same thing as something I do as well ? wink.gif

My nemesis is a weird technique called "legato"...I wish one of our instructors would do a lesson series based on legato...oh wait... ph34r.gif

Sweeping is great, never put that much effort in it but it is fun when I play it at slower tempos. I like Lian's lesson a lot:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Sweeps_Major_and_Minor/

Todd, these tripeggios you showed as last time are pretty cool. I think it would be fun to work on full sweeps in your chat.

Oh, there's another dreaded technique of mine. It was born in Atlanta, in a place with lots of parties and police sirens disturbing the peaceful quiet and it's called "thumbless double picking at 200+ bpm".

Techniques that I explored less are tapping and hybrid picking. I'm now using some GMC lessons to work on this techniques.

for hybrid picking I started with this one...

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Lead-Hybrid-Picking/

for tapping I used these great series...

Tapping 8 fingers?

I'm also working on speed, to master this lesson:

Hmmm Guess I have two Nemesis Techniques at the moment. Here they are in order of "Nemesisness" wink.gif

1. Sweep Picking. I'm a whole lot better than I was at it, but I still struggle with it. The lesson that helped me to develop the technique and bring it to the point I'm at now was this one: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/the-first-noel/
David's "The First Noel" lesson has two fairly simple major chord 5 string sweeps in it, and the rest of the song is pretty easy. I took those sweep shapes he used in that lesson and applied them up and down the neck, and it has really helped me to get an understanding of the required hand movements for sweeping. I'm still no Paul Gilbert at it, but at least I'm improving.

2. Legato descending on the 5th and 6th strings. I can play pretty good legato going from the sixth string to the first, or ascending the scale, but when I go from the 1st string to the sixth, I do ok on the first four strings, but the 5th and 6th strings give me trouble. Particularly when I play wide patterns, say for instance 3 note per string Ionian mode, I have trouble making the pull offs needed for legato smooth and even. I have really been working on this one in the last 2 weeks and I have to say I have gotten better at it, but I still say it is a tough one for me.

Hi Alex

Check out this String Skipping Arpeggio pattern in the Guitar Pro file below. Don't mind the shred run at the end of it too much biggrin.gif
you can treat all the diatonic arpeggios in the same way. As you know you can approach string skipping in many ways, but you never go wrong buy applying this technique to the basic Arpeggios in my opinion. smile.gif

Ah, in that case I can understand your trouble. When you get to the lower strings (depending on where you are in the scale) you may sometimes have to play those bigger stretches where you need to open out the angle of your hand a bit ore and make sure it's at a parallel (classical position) angle to the fretbaord so you can reach them. I totally understand you. smile.gif

Yeah I actually have been practicing that classical hand position, at first it felt really akward because I wasn't used to it. Now its more comfortable, and this week I have been playing through all the three note per string modal patterns up and down the neck, trying to play them with legato not real blazing fast but steady, and specifically making sure the legato on the low E and A strings is smooth. Its getting better, so guess the old saying is true...practice does indeed pay off! biggrin.gif ...Now If I could just get that darn sweeping down! there is always something tongue.gif
