Hi everyone
I've just joined and am 64yrs but I have been playing guitar since I was 13yrs, I experienced the wonderful 60's as a lead player in a band even spending two months in the Top Ten club in Hamburg in early sixties a crazy time, but my point is guitar playing and its techniques seem to have dramatically changed since then, for the best of course and I want to be part of all these teriffic techniques. I've embraced the metronome but I have a Hand made guitar which has some crap humbuckers fitted. I wish to fit some good quality humbuckers ( white colour) with plenty of drive etc, I'm only a bedroom player and of course don't gig anymore but any advice will be very welcome.
Thanks and regards
Tony Parnham

Tony,
is it the entire pickup that needs to be white or are you ok with just the cover? If it's the latter then you'll have a much wider choice. Covers like this one here can be got pretty easily and cheaply but I think the coice of all white humbuckers are more limited. If it's the latter I think Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio and Lindy Fralin do off the shelf white ones.

To recommend you a pickup I need: Body style, woods of body, neck and fretboard of your guitar, pickup type (humbuckers, coils, soapbars...) and the styles you play and sounds you want to achieve (rock, jazz, blues, metal)

I have a guitar fitted with a set of DiMarzio Breed humbuckers. Dark sounding pickups but the guitar body is adler which is a bright wood and they sound excellent in there. Plenty of drive in those! For the more modern sounds. My band play a modern kind of rock, on the border to metal in some cases but with blues roots in it. I'm very pleased with those.

Then I have DiMarzio Evolution in a basswood guitar, havn't played them too much since the bridge on that guitar broke. A tad more modern and bright sounding compared to the Breed but still the same pickup familiy I'd say.
Thick and rich.

Other "standard" combinations are Seymour Duncan 59/59 or JB/Jazz or JB/59.

I think even on Seymour Duncan's homepage you can enter some criterias and have a set suggested to you.

Welcome aboard man! smile.gif

Humbuckers don't have drive themselves, but some can have very hot output and push the amp a bit into overdrive. Example would be hi gain EMG active pickups with some active electronics.

Humbuckers can be roughly splitted into 3 categories, vintage, standard and hot. You will need a couple of hot ones my friend, and I recommend Dimarzio's Super Distortion perhaps. If you go active, check out EMG they are great for overdrive, very defined.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you very much for your replies which I value. I will look at the spec of my guitar in more detail and try to pick the pickups that will be appropriate. there are some good recommendations, thank you all.

I would recommend you Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates. They have moderate output, which is more than enough for almost anyone, but extremely well balanced tone. You can check some clips on Seymour Duncan website...
