GMC Forum _ Electronic Entertainment _ Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, Fps Adjustment?

Posted by: Fran Nov 15 2008, 12:04 AM

Hello,

As I'm aware that many GMC:ers use the logitech quickcam pro 9000, I have a question: I just got one, and I'm not able to record videos above 15 fps... I've changed resolution from 320x240, VGA and HD, and the image quality is very good, but the frame rate is always 15 fps...

Is there any way to change it to 30? I've checked all options in the logitech recording quickcapture software with no luck..., and the box states that the webcam can record "up to 30 fps", but how?

Thanks!

Edit: Ok, just managed to record at 30 fps using windows movie maker to record, instead of logitech's quickcapture software, I guess that will suffice!, still, if anyone has been able to record @30 fps using logitech's provided software, please let me know how smile.gif

In my experience, the software that manufacturers provide with their products is most of the time very clumsy and slow. I always recommend use of specialized third party software.
Regarding logitech webcam software, perhaps the answer lies in the manual or help if there is one.

Turn rightlight technology off if its on and use other light sources. This increases fps

yup that ones a killer

Thanks guys, I've tried turning RL off, but logitech's software won't record above 15 fps no matter what I do. I'll try adding more and more light, though the videos I record seem to have enough light (they are not dark at all).

Recording with movie maker allows me to choose the fps rate, although the results aren't really much better. Truth is the videos I shot with logitech's program at 15 fps aren't that bad actually. I will have to keep trying. I wonder if movie maker videos at 30 fps are "real 30 fps" or just interpoled after recording, I mean, maybe the camera recorded at 15 and the wmm converted it into 30, to no avail.

Oh well, all in all I'm happy with the webcam. Image is quite good for a webcam. I'll try with more light later smile.gif

I have a Sphere AF I think it's called which is the series above the quickcam and the quickcam is good. I will try and play around later to see if I can remember what I do.

Just realized that the camera records movies into .wmv format. Is there any way to make it record directly to .avi? I remember Cae post some samples here at the forums, and they were .avi, recorded with logitech's software, I wonder why it records in .wmv in my case.

Is there any way to select that? What's better .avi or .wmv?

wmv is microsoft's codec standard, so it is compatible with every windows system. This is why often manufacturers will support it.

Quality seems to be good enough too. Curious thing is I changed the extension of one of the vids to .avi, and it still plays laugh.gif

As others have said the Quickcam program works fine when Right Light technique is off. I assume right light technique should only be used for taking pictures. I can record videos in up to about 1024x768 in 30 fps with Quickcam program.

Well It still stays wmv smile.gif
You can always convert wmv files to divx avi or any other format with specialized sofwtware for conversion..

The player automatically plays the file if it recognizes the code within. This way you can play files with 123 extension, and they will play, because the player reads the code within.

i have the same probs with quickcam, mine also makes movies with only 15 fps

just wondering what Caelumamittendum does in another way that it works fine ?!?!?!?!?!?

I just noticed on my last video, the first with the 9000, recorded at 15 FPS also. I haven't been able to get a sharp picture yet either. Still working with it. Might try the Movie Maker next.l

Just a slight addition to this thread:

Video at 1280x960 at 30fps, which is actually full screen:

Hi Cae!

Just watched your video and it shows as 15 fps on BSPlayer, are you sure it is 30 fps?

Just one more thing: to get 30 fps vids with logitech's software, what do you do? Just turn off right light option and have a LOT of light in the room? Because I just tried that and it always gets 15 fps no matter what.

The only way I managed to squeeze 30 fps was using windows movie player, when you get to choose the quality of the movie, then it allows to choose resolution & frame rate. But even then I suspect it converts the 15 fps to 30 interpolating images, but doesn't show "real" 30 fps.

Misterious software, logitech has.

Looks a lot like 30 fps to me in VLC player and WMP - Haven't tried any other player. But there's no lacking or anything whatsoever - as would be with 15 fps.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Nov 17 2008, 04:03 PM

It's annoying as I don't know at all how to even see what fps I'm doing. I know the video always comes out crystal clear for me with no lagging using a Logitech device. I'm well happy with my device.

Posted by: Fran Nov 17 2008, 04:08 PM

The thing is, with BSPlayer, when you play a vid, it shows the resolution and fps, as in 640x480 @ 30 , where 30 is the fps.

In this case it shows 15, that's why I asked, but I agree, it looks very good. The other samples you post in a thread some time ago also where 15 FPS, but looked really good, and those are the same results I'm getting, so all in all I'm happy with the camera. Even though I'm having a hard time to get the max. 30 fps that it's supposed to achieve.

I've read some threads at logitech forum, and there's more people complaining about the same thing. I wish they would have added the option to choose frame rate in their program, but they didn't. One of their representatives even stated in the forums that "their software is made to achieve 15 fps even though tweaking some settings could produce 30 at certain resolutions, not all".

Supposedly it would be possible to achieve 30 fps at logitech's "HD" resolution setting, but I haven't succeed doing so using their software. And I had a well lit room and right light technology off. Results with movie maker achieved 30 fps, but maybe as a processing result, not "real" 30 fps. Not sure about that.

If something was 15fps, I am pretty sure it would be lagging more though.

Hmm. I am a bit confused now too. I can see what you mean in BSplayer. I tried recording something in WMP with 15 fps and a similar sized video with Quickcam Program. The latter is a lot better in quality though.

Last time I watched something in 15 fps, I thought it was pretty see-able that it wasn't 24 fps or 25 fps.
