Extended Range + 8 Finger Tapping... In The 60s?!? Options

You know how extended range guitars are all the rage these days? And 8 finger tapping is the next logical extension of Van Halen's revolutionary tapping technique?

Well, apparently we're all waaay behind the times. I just found this really cool clip of a guy called Dave Bunker playing his double neck, extended range creation, which was designed for tapping instead of conventional playing. And it's from the 60s!!!

That looks really cool. It's funny, I was thinking about a similar thing the other day, whether the things we consider 'modern' these days were actually already done back in the days. Now that we have this wonderful thing called the internet, if we do something that's innovative - like this guy did - it can basically be seen in the other side of the world in no time. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of 'modern' techniques were already done in the past, but went by unnoticed because the inventors weren't able to make the most of their innovative thinking

ya thats true. so-called modern techniques have been employed by artistic musicians for hundreds of years. Matteo Carcassi first learned piano before becoming one of the most famous classical guitarists in the early 1800's. he used some of the same muscle-memory techniques he used when playing piano and imposed them onto the guitar. Niccolo Paganini used similar techniques when playing violin and we all know how awesome he was. think of it this way...music is a language - it would be a boring conversation if all we used were nouns and verbs. we need to throw in the occasional adverb, adjective and expletive now and again to make things interesting.

These vintage videos really fascinate me.
It really shows that guitar is evolving in so many different ways, other then technique.
This is to me also logical as technique is nothing more then being able to express yourself on the instrument and play what you have inside you. There must be tons of undocumented stuff about guitarists doing crazy stuff back in the days.

What I'm wondering now is - what was new on guitar today and in last 10-20 years?
What was the biggest "leap"?

I do have a feeling guitarists are playing faster and faster and exploring more exotic sounds which might have sounded dissonant not so long ago - which now are starting to sound "normal".
