Here is the situation, my son who is 5 almost 6 sees me playing and practicing and tells me he wants to learn how to play too. I let him play around on my guitar but never thought about starting him on lessons. Do you guys think he is to young to start playing. I saw a small scale guitar at the music shop the other day that will fit his hands. He can play a D and A cord already. smile.gif

What do you guys thingk.. ?

Thanks

CI

If he wants to learn it, why not? Kids are curious, so I would encourage him.

5 or 6 definitely isn't too young. I played keyboard when I was 4.

Not too young at all smile.gif Just avoid forcing him to do a lot of practice, and theory, which he wont find fun. Playing music should always be fun smile.gif

I started learning to play the drums inside mummy's stomach before birth - that's a big NO, NO... older than that should be fine thou.

The issue is when at a young age, we are very curious, but also have a short attention span... what was I going on about again, something about a span... nevermind.

It's fun and great to start young, don't expect too much at first though and ensure they will know they wont just pick it up in go (might get annoyed if too much and give up). Practice something simple and fun with them, they might stick with it!

I wish I was allowed to start earlier on the guitar, but honestly I might of not stuck with it as much.

The younger the better! They say "Music runs in families" there's a good reason for it. It's beyond genetics. Families that that have musicians in them, tend to keep musical instruments around, they ten to play them, and in front of their children, they start showing their kids little bits of technique and playing at a very young age.

The same way that young children have a facility with language, they also have a facility with music or at least the potential. Once we get to be about 12 or 13 it gets a LOT harder to learn. That's when the rest of us usually start playing.

So I'd say go for it! Get him some economical gear and better gear if he keeps playing it. Can you watch some video lessons with him? Maybe show him a couple of chords?

Todd

My daughter got her first electric just before her 6th birthday and has been learning guitar, piano, recorder and choral singing since smile.gif . She's now 10. She also started learning the cajon late last year.

You'll need fingers, so give the zygote some time to get into the late stages of embryonic segmentation. Then you can start playing! huh.gif

I definitely think you should start him on lessons if he is showing the interest! Its the right age and he could learn easily and well. Its always good to start young. Same with sports and other things...

If it were my boy, I would get this, and then let him punk it up, or metal it up, depending on his preference. You know, some blood and bones type things, or punk decals, to make it look like "Punk Death Metal Hello Kitty". That would be me. I have never had children, but I am really good at raising and training dogs.
