In ears are great whether you sing or not.
I've noticed that as long as you get a decent length sound check and the guy running the board - either FOH or monitors - is paying attention then you should be good. *I used to play a lot of casino gigs. The stage volume had to be super quiet. Drums behind a glass screen and anything DI'd that could be (I used a session award JD-10 and later a POD but preferred an amp). Any one that used an amp had to have it pointing at them from the front - like a 'monitor'. I had my Boogie .22 or Blues Jr. down in front of me angled up with a mic on it. There were also the 'normal' monitors (band mix) in front of me. I hated it at first - because it's so non-traditional and the opposite of what you think it should be but I got used to it.
